General Summary/Purpose:

Responsible for maintaining animal colonies and will maintain/update animal protocols and conduct breeding, drug treatment, and behavioral experiments. In addition, will independently perform research laboratory experiments and work collaboratively with the other members of the lab. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.

Will be the lab member primarily responsible for lab management activities such as ordering, stocking of consumables/common reagents, and equipment management.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for care and maintenance of mouse colonies, including breeding activities.
  • Performs animal experiments, including drug treatments, sample collection, and behavioral experiments.
  • Performs research lab tests and experiments, independently and in collaboration with other lab members. Follows established procedures and protocols, utilizes appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
  • Responsible for routine lab operational activities such as: ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records, maintaining equipment, maintaining safety records, etc.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication. Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 2 years related clinical and/or research laboratory experience performing relevant or related techniquesrequired.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience.Related graduate experience may be considered for required experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree highly desired.
  • Prior experience in a basic science laboratory, particularly with a background in immunology, neuroscience, and/or neuroimmunology.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of good lab practices required.
  • Individual must to work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgment.
  • A preferred candidate would have familiarity with the following laboratory procedures and techniques: Ordering systems such as SAP. Animal work including breeding/care, procedures such as tail vein injection, behavioral studies. Molecular biology including PCR, plasmid DNA preparation, immunoblotting, ELISA; Histology/Imaging including tissue preparation and staining; Cell culture; Basic immunology and metabolism studies.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
