General summary/purpose:

The Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine invites applications for a leadership position in the area of patient safety and quality research.

In the role of Director of Research for the Armstrong Institute, the incumbent will report to the Director of the Armstrong Institute and SVP of Patient Safety and Quality for Johns Hopkins Medicine and help to oversee academic and scholarly efforts of the Institute. The person should ideally be actively involved in quality and safety research, advance the science of research, mentor and support faculty, build collaborations with other parts of JHU, and be a national and global voice for patient safety and quality.

Roles and responsibilities:

Administrative/Financial

  • In conjunction with the SVP and Administration, responsible for personnel decisions regarding research faculty and support staff.
  • With the support of AI administrative leadership to develop and manage budget. Regularly monitors the budget to review/revise or course-correct, if necessary.
  • Support innovation cycle for grant/contract production process. Leads environmental scanning efforts for grant opportunities.


Mentoring

  • Monitors and looks for ways to improve staff performance and engagement. Helps educate and develop faculty and research staff.
  • Provides annual faculty reviews with written summaries for those faculty members assigned and communicates results to SVP.
  • Mentors junior faculty and senior staff by helping to formulate a development plan for long-term success and regularly reviewing progress with them.
  • Meets with individual Faculty, as needed, to provide feedback on key performance indicators such as operational, financial, compliance, communication, teamwork, etc.
  • Discusses faculty performance with the SVP and applicable Department Chair to assist in determining promotions, raises and bonuses.


Research Operations

  • Participates in submission of annual JHMI Strategic Plan for AI research activity.
  • Provides team leadership by actively participating in academic, educational and administrative activities. Leads by example.
  • Plan, and co-lead with AI Director and SVP, the Quarterly AI Full Faculty meetings and other engagement opportunities.
  • Leads various research related committees such as Faculty Review Committee, AI Administrative Committee, Research Facilitation Council, Research in Progress, AI Small Grants Committee, JHM Safety Committee, and sit on applicable Advisory Boards, as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate annual research networking retreats.
  • Participates in Departmental leadership activities, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Allocation of Effort

Support for these duties will be approximately 20-30% FTE. Remaining support will need to be obtained in the form of internal funding, external sponsored contracts or grants .

A Ph.D. or M.D. (or foreign equivalents), along with relevant postdoctoral experience, is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across university divisions in conducting research.
  • Sustained research record commensurate with appointment to a senior faculty position in the School of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including scholars, policymakers and practitioners.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure sponsored funding.
  • Experience managing multiple tasks and budgeting time and resources appropriately.
  • Internal candidates should have successfully reached the faculty rank of Associate Professor within a Johns Hopkins University department. External candidates must possess the education and experience to be credentialed as an Associate Professor rank, or higher, within The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
