General Summary/Purpose

The Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery seeks a highly motivated and critical-thinking professional that wishes to participate in a dynamic multi-disciplinary research team that makes new discoveries about CNS disorders using state-of-the-art medical imaging and modeling techniques. Untreated Type 1 Chiari malformation (CM1) is a devastating neurological disorder that can be treated by a high risk and costly brain operation. Since the decision to operate is often based on common symptoms, such as severe headache, along with a single imaging measure of cerebellar position that is commonly recognized as inadequate, the concern for under- and especially over-treatment is high. With an estimated 4-5 million in the US carrying the current inadequate anatomical marker of cerebellar descent >5 mm below the foramen magnum and approximately 97% of these millions demonstrating only minimal symptoms or symptoms with other unrelated etiologies, there is a potential for tens of thousands of inappropriate operations with corresponding bad outcomes, while others suffer untreated. The CM1 public critically needs a biomarker that better reflects CM1 pathophysiology, allowing physicians a more accurate surgical selection.

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, the Research Specialist will perform independent projects related to research that will involve a broad range of technical expertise.

He/she will be expected to organize and present data to the faculty investigator. Additional responsibilities will include contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.

With supervision from a faculty investigator or senior staff, the candidate will be responsible for performing analysis of multiple ongoing research projects simultaneously, analyzing data, generating figures to summarize the data, and presenting the data to a faculty investigator in a clear and concise way and in a timely manner.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team to replace the simplistic CM1 radiographic diagnostic measure of cerebellar tonsil descent with a novel MRI-based biomarker that quantifies intrinsic cardiac-induced stretching and compression (deformation) of the brain and spinal cord. This project is ongoing and conducted in partnership with collaborators at Case Western Reserve University and Emory University.
  • Performs independent projects that will involve a broad range of technical expertise.
  • Performs the processing of images, quality control, and maintenance duties.
  • Reads and synthesizes the literature and contributes significantly in interpretation of the data.
  • Exercises independent judgment while evaluating and interpreting results.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Uses various software applications packages to assemble, manipulate, and/or format data or test reports.
  • Responsibilities include the daily operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, of databases, imaging repositories, and computers.
  • Analyzes and interprets data and prepares manuscripts.
  • Documents image-related procedures.
  • May assist with human subjects related tasks such as IRB correspondence, scheduling, and attending patient visits, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA biomedical or mechanical engineering, neuroscience, or related discipline.

A minimum of two years experience performing imaging analysis.

Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should hold an M.S. in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline and have experience in engineering finite element modeling (FEM) software, Matlab, and MRI post-processing and physics.

Previous research experience in diagnostic imaging, or closely related fields, is strongly preferred. Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred. Excellent data organization and communication skills are required. Excellent data acquisition / analysis skills.

Previous experience with scientific data analysis software will be advantageous. Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office is desired

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent English communication skills (written and oral) and ability to work with and lead a team including M.S. and U.G. students is expected.
