General Summary/Purpose

Position in the Department of Oncology Experimental and Computational Genomics Core (ECGC). The primary focus of this laboratory is provide comprehensive genomics support to both basic research and clinical projects within the Cancer Center and School of Medicine. This position will be filled by a person who will be responsible for all aspects of data generation for both next generation sequencing and array platforms.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, thermocycler, analytical balance, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry.
  • Prepare all reagents necessary for experiments and use proper sterile techniques to avoid contamination.
  • Use various techniques for sample preparation such as DNA and RNA isolation.
  • Operate the Illumina and Thermo Fisher DNA sequencers and Illumina EPIC array instrument.
  • Once analytical run is complete, export data to servers.
  • Design and execute experimental plan under supervision.
  • Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Completes annual university safety training, as appropriate.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • Documents all work performed in accordance with laboratory SOPs. In addition, creates, modified, and interprets laboratory SOPs.
  • Follows and stays up-to-date with projects.
  • Assists with incoming samples to ensure they are labeled correctly and accounted for. Put sample information into database to track and store samples at proper conditions. Maintains database on ilabs.

Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:

Daily use of sequencing and array instrumentation. Intermittent use of general laboratory instrumentation including but not limited to centrifuges, balances, pH meter, shaker, water bath, chemical fume hood, biological cabinet.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s in Science, Biotechnology or equivalent

Minimum of two years in a core or other service laboratory.

Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

  • In-depth scientific knowledge of required assays and techniques.
  • Demonstrated performance to provide leadership, training, and problem-solving for a laboratory team.
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental design, conduct, and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s in Science, Biotechnology or equivalent

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, organization, initiative and creativity.
  • The position requires the ability to positively interact with leadership within the Core Laboratory.
  • In addition the position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to research new areas, independently execute experiments, and manage projects without input of supervisor.
  • Experience using spreadsheet software required.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
