Job Summary
Level I:
Under close supervision, provides basic level skills and expertise to maintain, install, and replace plumbing pipes, fittings, and fixtures within campus facilities and infrastructure according to the National Plumbing Code.
Level II:
Under general supervision, provides journeyman level skills and expertise to maintain, install, and replace plumbing pipes, fittings, and fixtures within campus facilities and infrastructure according to the National Plumbing Code.
Essential Functions
Level I:
Repairs and maintains internal building plumbing systems as well as associated sanitary sewer drains. Fixes routine problems involving drains, toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, fixtures, valves, and domestic water supply piping. Installs plumbing piping, fittings, fixtures, valves, and other related appliances according to the National Plumbing Code as part of a project work crew or repair team. Assists in the repairs of water distribution piping and sanitary sewer piping. Performs preventative maintenance on building plumbing systems including drains, strainers, and valves. May be responsible for meeting and maintaining training and certification requirements as outlined by the Auburn University Facilities Management Policy: “Training, Education, and Certification Requirements for Mechanical and Electrical Trades Personnel”. May be required to serve in an on-call status and remain work-ready when scheduled for an oncall period or rotation. Work-ready status requires an employee to return to the worksite within fortyfive minutes while being physically and mentally unimpaired and fit for duty, able to safely perform all essential job functions with no risk to self, coworkers, students, public, or property.
Level II:
Repairs, installs, and replaces water and sanitary sewer piping, fittings, fixtures (sinks, faucets, toilets, urinals, etc.), valves, pumps, strainers, backflow preventers, boilers, hot water heaters, and water supply lines to equipment and appliances interior to campus buildings. Repairs, installs, and replaces exterior water distribution and storm sewer lines and related infrastructure across campus. Works on project crews executing large and complex new plumbing installation or replacement projects of building plumbing systems. Leads small project crews. Troubleshoots and leads routine and non-routine emergency repairs on exterior water distribution and storm drainage systems as well as interior building plumbing and gas systems. May be responsible for meeting and maintaining training and certification requirements as outlined by the Auburn University Facilities Management Policy: “Training, Education, and Certification Requirements for Mechanical and Electrical Trades Personnel”. May be required to serve in an on-call status and remain work-ready when scheduled for an oncall period or rotation. Minimum Skills and Abilities
Level I:
Skill in working with copper pipe to include “sweating” joints to connect fittings and pipe sections.
Skill in working with PVC pipe and fittings.
Skill in working with cast iron pipe and fittings.
Skill removing and installing valves, faucets, traps, drains, flush mechanisms, toilets, urinals, sinks, sink
hardware, and related plumbing fixtures.
Skill to be able to perform routine repairs involving plumbing components and systems.
Skill in performing basic piping layouts and configuration.
Skill in reading blueprints.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools applicable to trade.
Skills to support routine and non-routine emergency repairs on building plumbing and campus water
distribution systems.
Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines.
Level II:
Ability to lead work crews.
Ability to troubleshoot routine and non-routine plumbing problems.
Skills to repair, install, and replace water and sanitary sewer piping, fittings, fixtures, valves, pumps,
strainers, backflow preventers, boilers, hot water heaters, and water supply lines to equipment and
appliances interior to campus buildings.

Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications
Level I: Valid Driver’s License.
Level II: Valid Driver’s License and a Valid Journeyman’s Plumber’s License.
Desired Qualifications
Level I: Associate’s degree or vocational training in Plumbing Systems or related field.
