Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Molecular Imaging Bioimaging and Applied Research Core ( BARC ) is seeking a Preclinical Imaging Technologist who will be responsible for carrying out imaging studies for various disease models (cancer, cardiovascular, neurological, etc.) and drug discovery using preclinical MRI, PET, SPECT, and CT scanners.
Primary job duties include animal and radiotracer handling, and basic operation of all scanners and other equipment (under the laboratory Directors’ guidance), and routine tasks for lab upkeep. The successful candidate is expected to rigorously follow all guidelines and regulations regarding animal research and radiation safety, and be very organized, detail-orientated, and motivated to learn new skills in a small animal imaging setting. This individual will be a member of BARC and joining a team of research scientists and technicians dedicated to the development and advancement of preclinical imaging and drug discovery in furtherance of translational research. BARC is a core facility of Virginia Commonwealth University, dedicated to small animal imaging, and is equipped with state-of-the-art preclinical imaging systems, including MRI, Opto-Acoustical, and PET / SPECT /CT scanners.

Minimum Hiring Standards

The ideal candidate will have experience with preclinical MRI and/or PET / SPECT /CT studies. A working knowledge of programming languages (C+, in particular) is desirable. Small animal experience and a willingness to learn preclinical imaging. Candidates with strong in vivo imaging experience ( PET / SPECT or MRI ) but willing to learn animal handling techniques will also be considered.
BA, BS, BSc in Physics, Chemistry, Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Science, or a related discipline is required. Certification as a Radiologic Technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists would be regarded as an asset. The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
