Mission or Goal of Unit

The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Human and Molecular Genetics, Clinical Genetics Division, serves the Greater Richmond area by being the only facility to provide medical genetics services as well as the only training facility for Genetic Counseling students.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Human & Molecular Genetics Virginia Commonwealth University Health System seeks a full-time Genetic Counselor in the Division of Clinical Genetics. This is a non-tenure eligible faculty position in the areas of Genetic Counseling with experience in covering Clinical Genetics rotations. Our Genetic Counselors provide clinical genetic, laboratory and counseling services to families across the Commonwealth dealing with genetic conditions. Comprehensive clinical services are available, including preconception consultation, pediatric and adult diagnostic evaluation and management, metabolic consultation and management, and cancer genetic risk assessment, counseling and testing. This position also teaches in the Masters of Genetic Counseling program in the School of Medicine. Our faculty teach our students in all aspects of Genetic Counseling case preparation, management, and patient follow-up.

Position Responsibilities

Clinical
Faculty member will cover daily clinical rotations for Genetic Counseling services in both the hospital and outpatient settings. Genetic Counselors work closely with a variety of MD Geneticists and other healthcare practitioners at the health system to treat patients with a variety of genetic conditions.

Teaching
Faculty member will teach in the Masters of Genetic Counseling Program. The Department provides lifespan clinical services and is the center of genetic services for the medical center and Richmond Community. Our students are integrated in all aspects of training, including clinical, laboratory, and research experiences which our faculty lead. We remain the only Genetic Counseling training program in Virginia.

Service
Faculty member will participate in conferences with Clinical colleagues. Our Genetic Counselors are integrated throughout the health system, staffing several specialty clinics with other providers including Cranio-facial, Hematology, Ophthalmology, Neurofibromatosis, Marfan, Neurology and Cardiology services. We enjoy a long standing history of providing clinical genetic, laboratory and counseling services to families in Virginia and other states. Comprehensive clinical services are available. Participation in departmental, institutional and national committees and societies is encouraged.

Required Qualifications

• Licensed Clinical Genetic Counselor with Board certification in Genetic Counseling

• Candidates must be qualified for full, unrestricted Genetic Counseling licensure in Virginia

• Superb Genetic Counseling skills and the drive to excel in scholarly & teaching activities

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the graduate level

• Expertise in Genetic Counseling with ability to provide coverage of clinical rotations.

• Preference will be given to candidates with clinical experience and an interest and/or ability in teaching and scholarly activity as displayed through publication in professional journals and presentations at national meetings.
