Mission or Goal of Unit

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health needs of the communities they serve. Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and service and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences in the VCU School of Dentistry invites candidates to apply for the teaching and research faculty position of Oral Medicine Doctor. This faculty position will provide instruction, research, and patient care in oral medicine. The Oral Medicine Doctor will instruct students and residents to manage patients with disorders of the orofacial region, essentially acting as a physician of the mouth. They will also diagnose, train and manage cases of oral mucosal abnormalities (including growths, ulcers, etc.). Additionally, the incumbent will collaborate and participate with other units with VCU, VCU Health Systems and the Massey Cancer Center to provide outstanding patient care and continuing education for VCU Dental students and residents.

Position Responsibilities

The faculty member will have primary responsibility for course development, directorship, and teaching in the area of oral medicine and biomedical sciences for dental, dental hygiene, and advanced education students in collaboration with School of Dentistry and School of Medicine faculty members. Focus will be on curricula offerings spanning the entire course of study to support integrated biomedical and clinical sciences learning. Teaching across traditional department lines and in multidisciplinary teams is vital. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression. Clinical and didactic teaching are essential. Ongoing professional development in teaching and learning is expected.

It is expected that the appointed person will undertake scholarly activity resulting in peer reviewed publications. There are opportunities for collaboration with all Departments in the School of Dentistry and also with the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research (www.philipsinstitute.vcu.edu). The Philips Institute consists of all of our substantially externally funded research and is focused on diseases of the oral cavity and head and neck including head and neck cancer (with a particular interest in the role of human papillomavirus), bacterial infection and inflammation and bioengineering.

The incumbent will conduct a practice in oral medicine to include direct clinical patient care. The clinic includes close collaboration with an orofacial pain specialist and an oral pathologist. Consultation with other health care providers using secure digital methodologies is expected.

The faculty member will be expected to serve their department, the School of Dentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees and task forces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged. Service to external professional organizations is expected.

Required Qualifications

- DMD / DDS degree

- Eligible for licensure in Virginia

- Completed a CODA accredited advanced education program in Oral Medicine; applicants who completed a CODA accredited oral and maxillofacial pathology advanced education program and who have a strong and extensive experience in oral medicine will also be considered

- Diplomate of or board eligible for the American Board of Oral Medicine

- Clinical and teaching experience with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications

- Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology

- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

- Candidates must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning

- Candidates must demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking

For Instructor and Assistant Professor ranks, the candidate will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department

For Associate Professor and Professor ranks, the candidate will be required to have a well-developed scholarly and research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications
