Working Title: Power Plant Operator - Senior/Relief/Maintenance Official Title: Power Plant Operator - Senior Employment Class: University Staff FTE: 1.0 Compensation: $19.69 - $23.11 FLSA Status: Non-exempt Terms of Employment: Continuous Position Summary:

This position’s primary responsibility is to assist in the daily maintenance of the boilers and chillers and their auxiliary equipment.

Secondary responsibility is relief of Operator Seniors that are in “leave” status.

In maintenance capacity, this position works in conjunction with the Power Plant Operator In-Charge in the minor and major plant maintenance as needed.

While in relief of Operators on leave, this position is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Heating/Chiller equipment, records management, plant safety and security.

Must pass a pre-work screen to ensure the ability to perform essential physical functions of the position.

Responsibilities

50% Maintenance and Repair

a) Perform preventative maintenance on boiler/chiller equipment and auxiliaries as assigned. b) Perform maintenance/repair on boiler/chiller equipment and auxiliaries as directed by the Power Plant In-Charge or Superintendent. c) Perform maintenance/repair on buildings.

40% Operation and Maintenance of Boilers/Chillers and Auxiliary Equipment.

a) Operate gas/fuel oil fired boilers and auxiliary equipment safely and efficiently. b) Operate centrifugal electric chillers and cooling towers. c) Record hourly readings of critical plant functions and electronic and pneumatic controls. d) Test safety devices on equipment as required. e) Operate and maintain pumps, air compressors and motors as needed. f) Make minor repairs of equipment while on shift.

5% Testing and Treatment of Heating/Chilling Plant Waters.

a) Test and record water quality in boilers, chillers, softeners, reverse osmosis system and condensate return. b) Add chemicals and blow down water systems to maintain water quality within parameter limits. c) Regenerate softeners as needed to insure quality water.

5% Records, Reports, Safety and Security, Other Duties.

a) Accurately read and record all required plant gauges, controls and meters. b) Record all operational conditions of the shift in the “Plant Operations Log”. c) Frequently inspect the plant for abnormal conditions; including fire, steam or water leaks and intrusion onto plant property. d) Perform other duties assigned.

Qualifications Required:

• Willingness and adaptability to work under unpleasant conditions such as extreme noise, dusty or dirty areas, extreme heat and cold, in wet areas and confined spaces is required.

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodation.

• This position is part of the 24/7 plant coverage and may be assigned to various shifts including a rotating schedule that includes day, nights, afternoons, and most weekends and holidays.
• Experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of central heating and power plant equipment, including a high degree of mechanical aptitude, such as skill in making repairs and adjustments on all power plant equipment.

• Experience in the operation of various power tools, hand tools, and testing equipment used in the mechanical and electrical maintenance field.

• Knowledge of the operation of computer steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges, automatic controls, water pumps, chemical pumps, and related equipment.

• Knowledge of feed water heaters, feed water pumps, condensate pumps and forced draft fans, of generating equipment and of water testing and water softening.

• Knowledge of procedures for lockout-tag out, of the safe operation and maintenance of gas and oil fired steam boilers, of steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges, automatic boiler controls, and their related equipment and the operation and use of safety devices are required, as well as ability to learn and properly apply methods and techniques for the correct and safe performance of fairly complex physical and mechanical tasks and materials handling operations.

Preferred:

• Skill in record-keeping, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

• Experience operating forklifts, tractors, end loaders, and/or similar equipment.

• ASOPE (American Society of Power Engineers) Power Plant Operating Engineer 3rd Class or NIUPE (National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers) PPOE 3rd Class or FOE (Facilities Operating Engineer).
