The Administrative Director of Juilliard Historical Performance provides comprehensive leadership for departmental activities and initiatives, ensures that the department’s curricular and performance activities are planned and executed successfully; and assumes primary responsibility for fostering an environment of artistic excellence and educational growth.


  •  Primary representative and contact for the department for students, faculty, and other entities, both within and outside of the School
  • With the Provost, Dean and Director of the Music Division, and the Director of Historical Performance (HP), hire, supervise, and manage faculty
  • Long term and day-to-day supervision, planning, and strategy for all departmental activities, including budgetary, curricular, performance, personnel, communications, development, facilities, and student related issues
  • With the Director of HP, create and oversee the ongoing development and implementation of curricular innovations, initiatives, performance opportunities, and special projects
  • Develop, refine, and oversee departmental procedures and policies
  • Develop and nurture national and international partnerships and collaborations with other schools and performing ensembles/entities
  • With the Director of HP, curate, plan, manage, and supervise the performance season, including orchestra management, artist services, collaborations with other departments/organizations, space allocation, budget, production, ensemble library, etc.
  • With the Director of HP, identify, cultivate, engage, and contract visiting artists, conductors, lecturers, and guest teachers
  • Manage and maintain departmental budget
  • Develop and execute an ongoing recruitment strategy
  • In conjunction with the admissions team, oversee the audition and admissions process
  • Supervise instrument loans, acquisitions, and maintenance
  • In conjunction with development team, cultivate and maintain relationships with donors
  • Manage and oversee production of departmental performance tours
  • Supervise and manage Historical Performance office staff
  • Build and maintain strong relationships and networks with departmental alumni
  • Committee work as assigned

 Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in music or arts management and at least 5 years of professional experience in arts admin or higher education
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of early music, including the ability to read music
  • Experience running a university or conservatory music department or professional arts organization
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, and the mission of the Juilliard School
  • Strong decision making and leadership skills, and the ability to assess, prioritize, and find creative solutions when problem-solving
  • Ability to negotiate a wide variety of interpersonal and professional settings
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with people of various backgrounds, adapting with ease and authority
  • Ability to work well with students and faculty
  • Availability for evening and/or weekend work and travel
  • Willingness and creativity to take on special projects and to devise and enact departmental policies, procedures, and innovation
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook

 Preferred Background: 

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Professional experience with orchestral and/or concert management/production
  • Management experience
  • Experience performing early music or managing of an early music ensemble or educational program
  • Experience with budget and payroll procedures
  • Experience or knowledge of conservatory-based music education
  • Fundraising experience
