Assistant Professor of Cyber Security
The University of Southern Maine (USM) Department of Technology (DOT) invites applicants for a tenure-track, nine-month (September – May) faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor to start Aug 30, 2021. USM is the second-largest university in the University of Maine System, and the DOT has an enrollment of over 400 graduate and undergraduate students. The cybersecurity program is among the fastest-growing at USM and in the UMS, with over 150 graduate and undergraduate students. Our teaching facilities include a forward-technology LEEDS certified facility known as the John Mitchell Center, which houses the USM Cybersecurity Awareness, Research, and Education Support (CARES) Center. DOT is affiliated with the National Cyberwatch Center and is currently undergoing accreditation evaluation for designation as a National Security Agency (NSA)/Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Academic Excellence – Cyber Defense (CAE-CD).

The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in three essential pillars of teaching, service, and research. As a tenure-track faculty member, this person will teach under a nine-month contract structured as a three-three course-load. Since research is such an integral part of the tenure-track faculty role, the Dean has been very successful in procuring initial funds to get research projects underway. New faculty will also receive release time for a robust USM orientation in their first semester. They will also receive ongoing support as part of the faculty mentorship program, professional development opportunities, technology support, and a generous benefits package.
The successful candidate will be able to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently offered courses include introductory information security, penetration testing, digital forensics, cyber-law, cryptography, system security, network security, and security operations. This position requires the faculty member to teach both face-to-face and online courses. Our faculty also work closely with cybersecurity employers to meet workforce needs. Prior credit toward tenure may be available to the candidate if qualified. The targeted starting date for this position will begin in Fall 2021.

In addition to the above, the successful candidate may show many of the following characteristics:
- Practitioner experience in business, industry, non-profit, and/or government and/or professional certifications.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Experience with both online and in-person instruction modalities.
- Robust scholarly research interests as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
- Experience presenting at national, regional, and/or state-level conferences pertinent to the cybersecurity field.
- Enjoys teaching, advising, and mentoring students, faculty, and staff.
- A doctorate in Information Security, Cybersecurity, or similar fields OR may have a master's degree in Information Security, Cybersecurity or related field, has completed all coursework for the doctorate, and will be awarded the doctorate before the end of the first contract year.
