The Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy of Longwood University invites applications for a full-time, one-year appointment as a Lecturer in United States History, with a specialization in African American history, to begin in August 2021. This position will have a reduced teaching load and include research responsibilities for Longwood University's Bicentennial Initiative. Teaching load will be determined by enrollment needs in the history program. In keeping with the university mission to prepare citizen leaders, the Longwood history program has a strong tradition of preparing students to pursue careers in teaching and in public history, particularly within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach the upper-level, one-semester survey in African American History
- Teach introductory surveys in United States History
- Conduct research for the University's Bicentennial Initiative, a multi-year endeavor to create a more inclusive and expansive narrative of Longwood's history, one that brings to light the experiences of Black people at the University and reckons honestly with the institution's past. Research projects may include collecting oral histories of Black Longwood alumni and staff or conducting research in nineteenth-century and twentieth-century archival sources to understand the history of race at the institution
An M.A. in United States History, African American History, or closely related field is required. A minimum of 18 hours in History graduate coursework is required. Applicants who are ABD candidates or who have an earned PhD in History will also be considered. Experience teaching African American history or the United States history surveys (pre- and post-1865) is preferred. Research experience that will assist the Bicentennial Initiative, such as skills in oral history or working with nineteenth-century U.S. Southern archival sources, is preferred. A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is required.
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, instructional faculty position, one-year appointment. Salary will be $45,000. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits accompany this position.
