Position Title: Associate Director of ASCEND



Position summary: Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Student Success and Inclusion Programs, the Associate Director of ASCEND, supports the Director in a number of operational and programmatic efforts. Responsibilities include assisting in the implementation of the department’s strategic goals, program planning, policy formation, outcomes assessment, and annual reporting/compliance with the State and University. The Associate Director co-coordinates the annual Pre-College Institute, academic enrichment initiatives to include STEM enrichment and success coaching. The Associate Director will also supervise some program staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates ASCEND Success coaching; hires and trains undergraduate success coaches, tutors, and graduate interns.
  • Develops innovative academic success workshops for ASCEND students.
  • Develops and maintains an academic probationary student support system..
  • Participates in ongoing assessment and reporting on programmatic and student learning outcomes and impact of ASCEND academic support services.
  • Co-develops ASCEND STEM Initiatives
  • Coordinates the STAR STEM Academy and academic year services.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to implement ASCEND STEM initiatives.
  • Monitors student progress and their relationship with assigned success coaches.
  • Develops a process by which students will identify their individual learning style and learning strategies that correspond with their style.
  • Coordinates marketing and advertising of program workshops, trainings, events, and activities.
  • Plans the summer program leadership conference.
  • Oversees the transfer student process.
  • Works with counseling staff to develop and implement academic support to ASCEND students year round and during the day and evening in the form of academic success workshop, academic coaching, and individualized tutorial support to improve student retention.
  • Participates in campus-wide committees (e.g. search committees) as appointed by the Executive Director in support of the strategic plan of Student Development and Campus Life and advocacy for EOF scholar programs.
  • Oversees student success initiatives in the area of community service, leadership, financial literacy, career development, mentorship, cultural awareness, social justice and program advocacy.
  • Coordinates the EOF Alumni network and to include involvement in scholar success programs and other pertinent initiatives.
  • Resides/serves on-call during the six week summer program Pre-College Institute.
  • Coordinates the leadership component and programming, staff training, and student orientation programming.
  • Monitors overall effectiveness of summer components through classroom observations, peer leader input and student and staff feedback.
  • Effectively communicates overall University and ASCEND program goals, through staff meetings, one-on-one sessions, dissemination of written information and student interaction.
  • Improves student retention rates through the development of innovative programs.
  • Reinforces the ASCEND program by providing updated research on current trends in counseling and serving underrepresented students.
  • Prepare reports, compiles and summarize statistical data for developing program recommendations. Completes assessment/evaluation reports requested by the University and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Education/Educational Opportunity Fund State Office (OSHE/EOF).
  • Coordinates the process for reviewing the academic progress of program participants.
  • Collaborates with University departments and off campus programs for services, programs, and events for students.
  • Develops diversity, cultural awareness, community service and service learning programming for ASCEND students.
  • Maintains appropriate professional confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all types of financial aid available to student and rules and regulations governing them.
  • Monitors the academic progress of scholars through the use of progress reports, alert systems and other technologies/systems. Ensure scholars in academic jeopardy are advised and provided the proper referrals and mandatory support
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Available to work flexible schedule with some travel, evenings and weekends.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Student Personnel Services, Counseling in Higher Education, or other related field.
  • 3 years professional experience in higher education student support services.
  • Experience working with STEM programs and supporting underrepresented students within STEM fields.


Preferred Experience:

  • Program leadership experience working with diverse students in higher education setting.
  • Experience supporting grant development and management or working with grant funded programs preferred.
  • Experience with providing tutoring or academic support services to undergraduate students.
  • Knowledge, experience, sensitivity, and awareness of the needs of diverse student populations including: under-represented students, students with disabilities, students of color and student veterans.
  • Knowledge of best practices for time management, organization and study strategies.

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and organization skills; and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and expertise in budget development and management.
  • Ability to build cross functional alliances and train personnel in proper procedures and policies.






Skills and Abilities:

Technology: Working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, discipline related software.



Language Skills: Ability to: communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of the college staff, students, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and, respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.



Reasoning Skills: Ability to: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
