HVAC/Refrigeration System Technician

Position Purpose

This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Primary duties include preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems, and programming, installing and troubleshooting HVAC System Equipment / Controls, Building Automation controls, and energy management systems.

Key Accountabilities
  • Function as the primary technician and subject matter expert for HVAC systems and controls.
  • Maintain inventory of mechanical systems and develop preventive maintenance programs utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
  • Operate and maintain all computerized, microprocessor, electronic, and pneumatic based controls, ensuring proper operation to ensure a safe and comfortable indoor environment for the Academy community
  • Monitor the performance of controls and systems – provide analysis and troubleshooting and perform repairs and modifications
  • Lead and perform installation, repair and preventive maintenance on all campus HVAC equipment
  • Develop and implement solutions to building heating/cooling/air quality issues
  • Assist in developing and implementing standards and specifications for the construction, operation and maintenance of automated building systems
  • Review plans, specifications, and technical submittals and provide input to the project team during the design phase of projects
  • Assist in project turnover and final testing and commissioning of mechanical systems and controls.
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of current energy management strategies and building automation controls
  • Participate in the evaluation and selection of new and replacement hardware and software for automated building systems
  • Provide support to plumbers, electricians, and carpenters as needed with a scheduled “On-Call” rotation
  • Lead and assist IT and Network infrastructure/IP based Networks throughout campus with regards to HVAC and Refrigeration equipment/systems.
Computer and Other Qualifications for Position

Knowledge and familiarity with Apple iPhones that are utilized on campus. Computer literate and ability to operate Preventative Maintenance System that is used on campus. Familiar with Microsoft Outlook for sending/receiving emails, use of the calendar, and contact lists.

Experience

  • A minimum three years as a technician in HVAC systems installation, operations and maintenance, including direct experience with a computer based controls and energy management program required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with building automation controls similar to those currently in use within the Academy is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of mechanical operations and hands-on HVAC maintenance, including electrical, electronic and pneumatic control equipment, steam and hydronic heating systems and air conditioning systems required.
  • Strong refrigeration systems experience preferred
  • DDC control experience is required.
  • Familiar with Andover Controls strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with computer applications required.
  • Able to troubleshoot and Diagnose HVAC/Refrigeration systems.


Education

  • Associate's Degree preferred, preferably in HVAC technology or a related field.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification
  • Formal specialized training in DDC (Direct Digital Control) controls required.
