Title Andrew W Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Africana Studies Posting Number F00167JP Department Africana Studies Position Summary

The Department of Africana Studies at Bowdoin College invites applications for a teaching postdoctoral fellow. This appointment would begin July 1, 2021 and would be initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year depending on the needs of the department and successful review and reappointment. A PhD by start of appointment is required. Teaching responsibilities consist of three courses over two semesters. Areas of research specialization and teaching competency are open, though we are particularly interested in the interdisciplinary study of Africa and its diaspora outside of the United States. We are also interested in offering courses that will broaden our curriculum in ways that invite engagement with other fields, expand the scope of our own, and open our doors widely to curious students.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. Bowdoin is a learning community that warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population and from those who will enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity. We especially encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply.

Applicants for this fellowship must have completed their PhD no earlier than July 1, 2017. If they do not yet have their PhD in hand, they must provide documentation from their home institution confirming that they will receive that degree by no later than June 30, 2021. The appointment carries a $4,000 research and travel fund plus support to attend professional conferences.
Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit a cover letter that describes how your teaching, scholarship, and/or mentoring would potentially support our commitment to diversity and inclusion, a CV, a writing sample, and the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Review of applications will begin on May 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Founded in 1794 on the Maine coast, Bowdoin is one of the oldest and most selective coeducational, residential liberal arts colleges in the country. Located in Brunswick, a 30-minute drive north of Portland, the College is in an area rich with natural beauty and year-round outdoor activities. Bowdoin’s reputation rests on the excellence of its faculty and students, intimate size, strong sense of community, and commitment to diversity (35% students of color, 7% international students and approximately 15% first generation college students). Bowdoin College complies with applicable provisions of federal and state laws that prohibit unlawful discrimination in employment, admission, or access to its educational or extracurricular programs, activities, or facilities based on race, color, ethnicity, ancestry and national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, age, marital status, place of birth, genetic predisposition, veteran status, or against qualified individuals with physical or mental disabilities on the basis of disability, or any other legally protected statuses. Company

Bowdoin College

Bowdoin (rhymes with explodin') is a private, selective, liberal arts college, founded and endowed to benefit the common good. Our historic residential campus, located in Brunswick, Maine, is home to just over 1,800 students from all over the world.

Academic life at Bowdoin spans thirty-three departments, and is cooperative, not competitive: so we tend to attract students who like brainstorming with faculty, working in teams, and welcoming big, new, difficult questions.

We value kindness, diversity, creativity, and hard work.

There’s a lot to love about Maine. And this state is very much at the heart of the College. We simply wouldn’t be Bowdoin anywhere else.

According to one of our colleagues, “To teach at Bowdoin is to help train and educate future leaders—an unalloyed privilege in my experience and a rare one.”

We feel fortunate to live here and to be able to experience everything there is to see and do. Maine is renowned for its beauty—its iconic seaside fishing villages and beachesmountain vistas, and pristine forests. But the appeal is also very much about the people—their culture, sense of community, way of life, and welcoming, inquisitive, and energized spirit.

We’re not going to try to list all that Maine has to offer. But we will try to lead you in a few directions from which you can navigate your own journey of discovery—a very Maine thing to do too!
