Position Summary:

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) is currently the 4th-ranked Academic Family Medicine Department in the United States. This department is a distinctly large, tier one clinical department in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) based on size, scope, and complexity.

The Communications Manager is holistically responsible for communications for the department, with special emphasis on strategic areas such as, research, clinical programs, education, community health, and internal communications. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating, writing and editing publications, external correspondences, e-newsletters, e-mail communications, reports, executive communications, Web-based education content, Web and intranet content, and social media content. Additionally, this position is responsible for the oversight and planning of DFMCH events. This includes, but is not limited to, social, awards, community, educational and internal events. This position works collaboratively with the SMPH Dean's Office and staff at UW Health Marketing and Communications.

Under the direct supervision of the Department Administrator and working closely with the Department Chair, Vice Chairs, and unit directors within the department, the Communications Manager will support advancing the department as a leader in Family Medicine practice, research, residency and education, and community health through its growing, innovative and diverse set of programs, services and collaborations.

This will be achieved by:
- Building and evolving a Branded House marketing strategy that benefits from shared expertise and a consistent set of core resources but also connects with clients, partners, peers, students and community partners in program-specific ways to meet their needs.
- Telling the story of the Department's impact across its service areas. Collaborating with key strategic partners to advance shared initiatives and objectives.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. Field of study in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing or
Healthcare field desired.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

- 3 or more years of professional communications and/or marketing experience required, preferably in a medical, research or higher education setting.
- 3 or more years of events planning or event management experience required.
- Experience providing staff support and/or supervisory support within a multidisciplinary team is desirable.
- Experience coordinating multiple different internal and external communication channels and projects.
- Proficiency with web content management concepts and systems including experience with social medial platforms and management tools required.
- Demonstrated team skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders preferred.
- Preference will be given to candidate with UW-System Experience (or UW-Madison) experience.

Prefix assignment determined by years of relevant work experience. A minimum of 7 years' experience is required for appointment at the senior level.

Additional Information:

We prefer to fill this position full-time at 100% FTE.

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid work status to work in the United States.

Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/ ). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
