The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics in The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, invites applicants for a full-time academic year, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor of Chinese Language, Literature, and Culture, who will also serve as the Chinese Language Coordinator. Position will be hired on a three-year term contract with possibility of renewal. Expected to work during summer when necessary. This is an academic year appointment, with additional compensation for summer work. Appointee must be available to start summer work July 1, 2021, with academic year appointment to start August 23, 2021.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Chinese linguistics, language, literature, and culture required in hand by August 2021. Native or near-native fluency in standard spoken and written Mandarin and English required. Experience teaching language and literature courses in Chinese at an American institution is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching three language or literature courses per semester (with no fewer than 20 credits per academic year) and overseeing the coordination of a growing Chinese language program. The successful candidate will be familiar with new pedagogies and methodologies of teaching Chinese language and literature. S/he will be responsible for further developing the Chinese curriculum, creating new classes, and strengthening currently existing courses using innovative and theoretically-ground approaches.

Additional administrative duties as assigned by department chair, including but not limited to placement exam administration, professional development leadership and participation, advising, and committee service. The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics is particularly interested in candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to the Department’s, the College’s and University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
