The Syracuse University School of Art invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Illustration Program beginning August 2021. The position offers a 3-year renewable contract, based on exemplary performance and University need. The scope of this position primarily involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the Illustration Program.

The successful candidate will engage in teaching and service to the School, College and University as well as contribute to the discipline as appropriate. Qualifications

• MFA in Illustration, Visual Communications, Animation or related program preferred.
• Teaching experience with a successful track record of working well with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and with varied technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities.
• Evidence of a commitment to working collegially is required. Evidence of a commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds is required.

Job Specific Qualifications

• A knowledge of the history of illustration, design and fine art as a foundation for forward-thinking explorations – both technical and creative.
• An understanding of illustration and art in the context of broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological dynamics and issues.
• A comprehensive knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite programs, as well as Procreate and other widely-used software.
• An ability to connect the illustration program to the professional community facilitating opportunities tailored and suitable to the students’ interests and abilities in illustration and art.
• The ability to communicate clearly and mentor students.
• An interest in working collaboratively within the School of Art, VPA, the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.
• Communication skills and cross-cultural abilities that maximize effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.

Responsibilities

The School of Art offers degrees in Illustration ( BFA, MFA ), Studio Arts ( BFA, BS, MFA ) and Arts Education ( BFA, MS). The successful candidate will:
• Teach introductory through advanced level courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in the Illustration program, with a current teaching load of 3/3, subject to adjust based on enrollment demand.
• Mentor and advise students.
• Pursue teaching excellence from course preparation and delivery to students in support of their learning, to providing adequate assessment through critical feedback and mentoring.
• Contribute to course and curriculum development to enable the School to continue to build academic excellence.
• Engage in service to the School, College and University, through participation in meetings, committees and recruitment as well as contributing to their discipline as appropriate.
• Cultivate and nurture interactions and opportunities in the professional field of illustration and art.
