The Department of Information Technology & Analytics in the Kogod School of Business at American University invites applications for a renewable one-year research assistant professor position starting June 1, 2021 and ending May 31, 2022. The appointment is a 12-month term position, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Working closely with Professors Heng Xu and Nan Zhang, the candidate will manage the research and programmatic efforts in the areas of data analytics, information privacy, and machine learning; this includes leading concurrent research projects and related engagements, stewarding opportunities to expand the reach and impact of Robust Analytics group, and mentoring students. This position involves working on 1-2 project areas at a time. Depending on the candidate’s skills and interests, the position will provide the research opportunity to:

  • Apply methods from behavioral economics, consumer behavior, data analytics, and machine learning to better inform consumers about their decisions on information disclosure.
  • Conduct research in personnel selection and machine learning to promote fair personnel selection in the current legal structure.


Applicants should hold a PhD degree in psychology, sociology, economics, statistics, business, computer science or related fields. Highly qualified applicants with a status of ABD (All-But-Dissertation) will also be considered. Other desirable skills and experience include: i) experience with quantitative social science methods such as designing, implementing and analyzing experiments or surveys, ii) experience supervising research assistants, and iii) communication skills in terms of effectively sharing research findings with diverse audiences (via academic papers, blog posts, visualizations, speaking engagements, interviews, etc.). We are especially interested in candidates who, through their research activities will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the Kogod academic community.
