Williams College is seeking a Licensed Plant Operator for our Combined Heat and Power Facility. The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of equipment within the Williams College facility. The Williams College Central Heating Plant is a combined heat and power plant that supplies steam for comfort heating and domestic hot water to approximately 90% of the College Campus. It also supplies approximately 20% of the electricity consumed by the Central Campus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain boiler steam loads and demands under the direction of the Shift Lead
  • Operate and maintain boiler equipment, fuel handling equipment, and boiler feed water equipment
  • Acknowledge and take corrective action in response to all central system alarms under the direction of the Shift Lead
  • Ensure proper "Lock-out/Tag-out" procedures are followed per plant policy procedures under the direction of the Shift Lead, Assistant Plant Manager or Plant Manager
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs to equipment under direction of Shift Lead and during summer maintenance schedules
  • Perform water tests on all water treatment processes required for the supply and treatment of boiler feed water and condensate; change chemical treatment accordingly, and add correct chemical dosage, log chemical changes and all pressures, temperatures, meter readings, etc., required for proper operation of the boilers
  • General manual work, such as cleaning stations, opening and closing valves and opening and closing manways
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures required by Williams College and the applicable general laws for Massachusetts
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Shift Lead, or Management. No task or duty is exclusive to a classification or skill set except as mandated by the Massachusetts license law Chapter 146


Qualifications

The Operator must possess at a minimum a Stationary License from the State of Massachusetts to operate steam boilers. They must be able to perform water chemistry tests, and follow proper chemical usage and handling procedures in accordance with their Safety Data Sheets. Ability to work rotating shifts and holidays. Ability to work overtime as required. Experienced working with computers, instrumentation equipment, and control systems. Ability and willingness to learn the control systems, data logging, and other systems as required.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND/OR TRAINING

  • Possess at a minimum a Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman’s License or higher.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Able to read, write and communicate verbally in English.
  • Must hold a valid driver license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • A valid Massachusetts Hoisting License for overhead crane and fork truck is desired.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to high pressure steam at elevated temperatures. Exposure to high DB noise levels requiring the wearing of ear protection for up to 12 hours per day. Exposure to dust, smoke, oil, high voltage electricity, rotating equipment, and chemicals. Due to the industrial nature of the building where there is multi-levels separated by open grates, hard hats must be worn at all times.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical requirements include but are not limited to: ability to lift (50) pounds, use hand tools and test instruments, working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring extensive stair and ladder climbing. Wearing of personal protective equipment in the performance of duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, etc.). Able to enter boiler steam and water drums for cleaning and inspection. Able to walk steam tunnels for inspection if required. Able to enter boiler furnaces for cleaning and inspection.
