Lewis & Clark College is recruiting for a Training Director/Staff Psychologist to serve in its Counseling Service.
Job Summary
The Training Director/Staff Psychologist is responsible for coordinating and supervising the Counseling Service training program for graduate students in training to be mental health professionals. This includes providing strategic leadership, planning and evaluation of the training program; coordination of the agency's training team; as well as the annual recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of student trainees. As staff psychologist, this position provides personal, academic, and crisis counseling to students. The psychologist provides consultation to students, parents/guardians, faculty/staff, as well as to other clinical staff within the Counseling Service. All job duties are executed in a way that promote the department's and college's goals of social and racial justice, equity, and inclusion. This position is part of the Counseling leadership team, and may represent the department on campus committees.
The successful candidate will have an understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education and the workplace. This will be combined with a comprehensive understanding of the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and/or racially and ethnically diverse students, particularly in predominantly white institutions. They will have the skills and experience to provide culturally responsive care and will collaborate with campus and community partners to engage in meaningful advocacy, psycho-educational outreach, and clinical intervention designed to promote student success and well-being. Additionally, this position requires strong generalist clinical skills to assess and intervene with a wide range of presenting student concerns within a time-limited treatment model.
This position is full-time (37.5 hours/week), 10 months/year (August-May)

Job Duties & Responsibilities
Program Management (15% )
- Provide strategic leadership, planning, oversight and
evaluation of the training program for graduate students in
training to be mental health professionals.
- Coordinate the agency's training team to achieve program
objectives.
- Responsible for the overall quality of the training
program.
- Ensure the training program advances the agency's objectives
for diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Serve with the Clinical Director and the Chief Psychologist on
the Counseling Leadership team.
Trainer (25%)
- Maintain relationships with training coordinators affiliated
with graduate training programs from which we might recruit.
- Coordinate the annual recruitment, selection, training,
supervision and evaluation of graduate trainees.
- Supervise one or more trainees directly.
- Responsible for authoring and revising training materials to
support trainees and the training program.
- Monitor the progress of all trainees, and determines whether
their progress is satisfactory.
- Responsible for interventions with any trainees whose
performance does not meet professional standards for a
trainee.
Consultation and Treatment (50%)
- Provide culturally sensitive and informed mental health
assessment and diagnostic services related to developing effective
treatment plans and making appropriate referrals of student
clients.
- Serves as an advocate and as a liaison in referring students to
on- and off-campus resources.
- Provide culturally sensitive personal counseling services via
individual, group, and couples formats.
- Personal counseling services include crisis intervention,
psycho-therapeutic, situational, relational and developmental
counseling.
- Provide academic counseling focusing primarily on the
psychological issues involved in academic success (e.g.,
assertiveness, time management, study skills, communication skills,
etc.).
- Provide psychological consultation services for students,
faculty, parents/guardians, and staff related to psychological
issues.
Outreach and Engagement (5%)
- Engage in outreach and student engagement initiatives outside
the Counseling Service, including those programs focused on
supporting students from marginalized identities in accessing
services.
- Serve as the Counseling Service liaison with one or more
designated student affinity groups (e.g., Black Student Union,
Queer Student Union, Gente Latina Unida).
- Participate actively in divisional and College
activities.
- Provide leadership and service on college committees.
- Represent department through attendance at campus events.
- Provides support to Student Life and College initiatives.
Compliance (5%)
- Maintain appropriate documentation (e.g., clinical notes) for
all services.
- Participate in regular consultation regarding cases.
- Maintain knowledge of ethical and legal standards of
care.
- Provide all services in alignment with ethical and legal
standards.
- Obtain appropriate continuing education to maintain license and
develop professional skills.
- Maintain awareness of professional trends and practices.
- Maintain contact with appropriate professional associations and
networks.
Non-Essential Duties
- At times when the Chief Psychologist and the Clinical Director
are unavailable, may be called upon to be to provide leadership to
the institution and psychological consultation to the campus
community for after-hours crises.

Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in psychology or closely related
discipline.
- Licensed as a psychologist in the state of Oregon by the start
of employment.
- Four years post-doctoral clinical experience in mental health
setting required.
- Three years experience providing clinical supervision or
training.
- Experience providing clinical services in a college mental
health setting.
- Ability to work effectively with and support the full range of
diverse students (e.g., of varying ethnicities, race, gender,
sexual orientation, ability, religion, national origin,
socio-economic status, etc.)
- Ability to provide mentoring and clinical supervision to
graduate students in training.
- Ability to educate and mentor trainees to advance their
awareness and understanding of 1) their own identities; 2) how
those identities impact client care; 3) racial, cultural, and other
identities of students; 4) how to best support historically
marginalized students.
- Knowledge of issues related to clinical training
programs.
- Ability to develop, organize and supervise a training
program.
- Knowledge of mental health issues affecting college
students.
- Knowledge of counseling theories and techniques and
DSM-V.
- Ability to assess counseling client needs and assign DSM-V
diagnoses.
- Ability to establish effective treatment plans.
- Ability to seek out consultation when needed to improve
clinical services, and integrate feedback from consultation into
services.
- Ability to provide effective personal, academic, career and
crisis counseling.
- Ability to provide effective general consultation to faculty
and staff; ability to provide clinical consultation to counseling
staff.
- Self-awareness of how one’s own identities and life experiences
impact their counseling strategies and interactions with
students.
- Ability to provide effective outreach programs to students,
faculty and staff.
- Knowledge of ethical codes and legal statutes related to the
practice of college mental health.
- Ability to collaborate closely with a range of staff.
- Knowledge of limits of competence—as it relates to ability to
providing counseling services.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise and experience serving BIPOC students, and/or
expertise and experience serving LGBTQIA+ students
- Three years experience providing clinical services in a college
mental health setting.
