Assistant Professor of Instruction, Reading Education

Job Description: The Ohio University Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, Department of Teacher Education is accepting applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Instruction position with expertise in Reading Education. The successful applicant will bring strong qualifications, both academically and professionally, in the field of Reading/Literacy Education, with high interests in effective teaching and advising in programs that prepare candidates for an initial teaching license in Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent-to-Young Adult Education and Special Education, as well as at the advanced Master’s level. Candidates must be committed to teaching excellence, to a clinical approach to teacher education, and to service delivery within inclusive settings. We expect that candidates will support our mission of developing life-long learners and strong advocates while serving diverse individuals using an assets-based viewpoint.

The Department of Teacher Education and the Patton College of Education are inclusive spaces that support faculty innovation in the literacy field, professional development and success of diverse faculty. The Department of Teacher Education provides opportunities for faculty to implement rigorous literacy-related teaching practices, and opportunities to partner with local rural and urban schools and communities, and opportunities to foster international literacy-focused connections. A formal faculty mentorship program is available for pre-promotion faculty as a means to support their success both within the Patton College of Education at the University level.

Responsibilities: Position responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching, advising, field supervision, service (i.e., to college, department, program, and field-based professionals), and collaborating with colleagues to ensure program quality and maintain CAEP accreditation. Courses that reading faculty teach include a focus on: developmental reading, reading assessment and instruction, language and diversity, reading across the content areas at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Our master’s in reading program is fully online and faculty would be expected to teach online courses that include a focus on language and diversity, literacy coaching in the classroom, and supporting masters reading research projects. Instructional faculty load includes a commitment of teaching four courses in both Fall and Spring semesters. Most of the initial licensure programs are taught in a face to face format, so candidates will need to be able to teach in either format.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Reading Education or a literacy related field (by the time of hire)
  • A minimum of three years of literacy-related teaching in a P-12 school
  • Evidence of teaching experience in college-level reading/literacy-related courses. Candidates will be evaluated on how well their teaching experience and training aligns with courses offered in the Reading Program as detailed above. Candidates will also be evaluated on their experience and commitment to building inclusive and rigorous classrooms that center both literacy and equity.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in the reading/literacy field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and skills in the use of reading/literacy research and research-based practices to inform teacher preparation and continuing professional development
  • Knowledge and skills in teaching English Language Learners (ELL)
  • Knowledge and skills in differentiating instruction and implementing culturally relevant literacy instruction
  • Experience advising and working with graduate students on theses/research projects
  • Experience with online teaching and distance coaching
  • Experience preparing students for the edTPA
