Humanities Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellowship: 2021-2022

The Penn State Humanities Institute seeks applications for up to two newly available Post-doctoral Fellowships for the 2021-2022 Academic Year. Fellowships are for up to two years. Fellows will be in residence at the Humanities Institute at Penn State and will be afforded office space (assuming normal operations in Fall 2021) and support for ongoing research projects. No teaching is required for these Fellowships, however teaching opportunities may be available if the scholar wishes.

The Penn State Humanities Institute is dedicated to supporting research and teaching in the humanities that is shaped by a collaborative spirit and is alert to how humanities scholarship is crucial for broader conversations about pressing social issues. Several initiatives housed in the Institute are grounded in this mission, including the Humanities in the World funding program, which supports these Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Applicants can come from any area in traditional humanities fields (as defined, for example, by the National Endowment for the Humanities: https://www.neh.gov/about). Applicants are encouraged to explain how their work bears on issues of social concern, even if indirectly. The successful applicants will be distinguished by their scholarly excellence and how their work fits in with the central values of the Institute's mission. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

Please note: A separate set of post-doctoral fellowships are also being offered by Penn State through the Humanities Institute. These are connected to the Mellon Just Transformations Initiative. If interested in those positions, please see separate ads for Mellon Just Transformations/Humanities Institute Fellowships and apply accordingly.

The HI welcomes applications from scholars who have received their PhD's within the past three years (after May 1, 2018). Terminal degrees must be in hand by July 1, 2021. Applications should include (1) a CV, (2) contact information for two references, and (3) a letter describing how you might be suited for the position and detailing your area(s) of expertise and training. It is expected that the fellow will be in residence at Penn State's University Park campus (assuming normal operations in Fall 2021), be available for interaction with PSU faculty and grad students, and to participate in the Institute's colloquia and other events, as their interests dictate.

Review of applications will begin on April 12 and continue until the positions are filled.
