Summary of responsibilities for theAssociate Director for the Department of Medicine: This individual is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of high-end annual gifts in support of the Department of Medicine from friends, grateful patients, alumni, and foundations. The Associate Director will also oversee the Annual Fund Program within the Department of Medicine and serve as the liaison with the Annual Fund. In this role, the Associate Director will work with development staff members, faculty, and administrators and manage a portfolio of prospects with a particular focus on gifts in the $25,000 to $250,000 range.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities of the Department of Medicine, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
  • Manage the Annual Fund Program for the Department of Medicine with a major focus on building the Major Gift and Estate Gift pipeline.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of prospects, engaging and moving them along the prospect readiness continuum as appropriate, whether via discovery, cultivation, solicitation or stewardship visits. This includes a goal of at least 80 visits annually and 50 substantive actions.
  • Partner with gift officers and faculty members to identify and create strategies for outreach, approach, solicitation, and stewardship of grateful patients in support of their research, division, and/or satellite clinic.
  • Coordinate and lead annual giving projects such as Doctor’s Day, disease months, mini-campaigns, social media platforms, etc. and manage tours, virtual webinars, luncheons, and prospect visits with faculty as needed to advance pipeline development.
  • Participate in the planning of major development events, such as Chair or Professorship dedications, and Legacy Society luncheon, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • The Associate Director must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to use good judgment and juggle priorities in a fast-paced environment. He/She must be able to use discretion handling confidential information and be able to forge strong relationships with Department of Medicine’s grateful patients, faculty, volunteers and friends, and other members of the team.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • At least three years related experience, preferably in a university and/or medical setting; experience in annual giving and social media and virtual giving platforms preferred
    • Demonstrated abilities as a writer and editor
    • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills
    • Willingness to travel and to work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
