The Spangler Lab wishes to recruit qualified individuals to support our group’s research, which is focused on applying structure-guided biomolecular engineering to develop novel platforms for the design of protein therapeutics to treat immune diseases such as cancer, chronic infection, and autoimmune disorders (www.spanglerlab.jhu.edu). The Research Technologist will be trained in cutting edge technologies in protein biochemistry, structural biophysics, molecular evolution, and translational immunology, have access to state-of-the-art resources and equipment, and contribute to high-impact research at the interface of engineering and medicine.
Primary duties and responsibilities of the job will include:
- Direction of research projects under the general supervision of the faculty investigator and senior lab members
- Protocol development and assay design
- Critical analysis of data
- Identification and troubleshooting of situations requiring special attention
- Lab management and organization
- Purchasing, operating, and maintaining lab equipment and supplies
- Weekly presentation of results to the lab
- Design of figures and preparation of text for reports and publications
The work will involve a wide range of techniques including:
- Protein expression and characterization
- X-Ray crystallography
- Molecular biology/cloning
- Molecular evolution (Yeast and phage display platforms)
- Culture of primary cells and established cell lines
- Cell-based activity studies (Flow cytometry, western blotting, ELISA)
- Animal models of immune disease
Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules may include weekend work and holiday assignment.
Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, biology, chemistry or related field required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
- Relevant research experience in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and biophysics is preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- The successful candidate will be proficient in best lab practices, exhibit strong communication and management skills, and demonstrate the ability to work independently.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
