General Summary/Purpose:

The Johns Hopkins in the Retrovirus Biology Laboratory of the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology, School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Research Technologist to provide laboratory support and to assist with research coordination for multiple research studies related to HIV-1 infection, replication and persistence. The Retrovirus Laboratory is a multidisciplinary team of faculty from the Johns Hopkins (JH) School of Medicine. In the hope of revealing new directions for therapies, the group studies an HIV-1 gene that has been shown to play a role in the virus replication, latency and persistence. The team seeks to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie the role of this HIV-1 gene in the virus lifecycle in hopes of developing novel therapeutic, vaccine and cure strategies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Key laboratory duties will include, but are not limited to, working under Biohazard Level 2+ Safety conditions with HIV-1, handling human biospecimens, biospecimen processing, biospecimen inventory and management, PBMC isolation, and DNA extraction.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Must follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
  • Additional duties include data entry, maintenance of biospecimen records, purchasing, bookkeeping and other laboratory housekeeping tasks. The individual will be responsible for monitoring the laboratory sample repository, and will support other laboratory members in their projects as assigned by the principal investigator.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • One (1) year undergraduate experience in a laboratory performing relevant techniques.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent time management, punctuality, written and verbal communication, and record keeping skills are strongly preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
