General Summary/Purpose:

The Laboratory Manger is responsible for administrative and scientific activities of the laboratory. Also responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research, staffing, equipment and space. Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets. Extensive knowledge of biomedical research and how laboratory organization satisfies research goals and objectives. This position will directly supervise at least two laboratory professionals.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

    Responsible for overall operational elements of laboratory functioning as representative of PI.
  • Participates in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to the lab.
  • Develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives and those of the laboratory team members.
  • Manage staff including recommendations for hiring, terminating and performance appraisal of a unit.
  • Act as a project manager (e.g. lab renovation, equipment purchase, work with contractors, negotiate cost.) Approve significant grant expenditures and approve significant equipment purchases.
  • Implement new protocols, oversee assay validations in conjunction with PI.
  • Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of lab for regulatory reviews.
  • Operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Supervise data collection and verification based on specialized skill and knowledge.
  • Manage mouse husbandry; genetics; and general animal care (mouse).
  • Oversee Confocal Microscope service center.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
  • 5 years related experience and proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
