General Summary/Purpose:

The Sr. Research Specialist II will manage the daily laboratory operations for the Institute for Cell Engineering. The individual in the role should be able to work within and support a culture of safety. This position requires attention to detail, sound communication/interpersonal skills (oral and written), as well as commitment to customer service both internal and external. Responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research, staffing, equipment and space. Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets and core billing. Extensive knowledge of research and how laboratory organization satisfies research goals and objectives.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and select best options for experimental design, data collection, and interpretation based on literature review, technical training, advanced knowledge/understanding of activity, and collaboration with customers.
  • Perform lab bench and in vivo experiments including DNA/RNA/protein purification, PCR, western blots, recombinant DNA and molecular techniques, sequencing, stereotaxic injections, regional dissections, perfusions, behavioral testing, designing complex mouse breeding schemes
  • Ensure compliance with ACUC regulations and Material Transfer Agreements, as well as Biosafety and Radioisotope safety.
  • Coordinate the import and export of transgenic mice and human/ mouse tissue samples.
  • Troubleshoot, applying specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions.
  • Train lab personnel on complex scientific models, supervise other laboratory personnel’s scientific experiments, and data analysis.
  • Perform routine operational activities, including but not limited to, acquisition of supplies and equipment, inventory review, equipment maintenance to ensure the laboratory remains operational.
  • Refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Advise investigators on experimental design and research methods.
  • Assist PIs with making decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction.
  • Monitor equipment and supply budgets, authorize and execution of purchases.
  • Maintain computer hardware and software and assist with computer problems.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required
  • Six years related experience in a laboratory performing relevant techniques.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
