General Summary/Purpose:

Cancer is now a major health concern globally. The consistently higher morbidity and mortality in developing compared to developed countries, indicates a poor prognosis for incident cancer cases in low resource settings and underscores the need for education, research, and capacity development. We are looking to hire a research assistant to work on an international research program focused on prevention and control of cancer in low-resource countries with a focus on breast cancer in Mwanza, Tanzania. The individual will be an integral part of the study team, and contribute to both study development, implementation, and research dissemination.

The Sr. Research Assistant will work closely with the P.I., the Johns Hopkins IRB’s, and international study collaborators and funders/sponsors. The Individual will collect data; develop complex study and IRB protocols and consent forms; prepare study reports to include written text, figures, and tables; support grant application development through identifying appropriate funding opportunities, coordinating research activities with collaborators, and assisting with literature reviews; coordinate study implementation, including development of data collection tools and protocols; will help train local staff members; assist in disseminating research findings; and oversee and develop weekly agenda for the PI and study team. The senior research assistant is expected to work at our Tanzanian research site in Mwanza.

The individuals must be able to live abroad and work independently in challenging settings, work well with a diverse team of colleagues, be responsive to requests, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to problem solve.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Primary Data Collection
  • Develop complex study and IRB protocols and consent forms

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a health-related field

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • International work experience, primary data collection, program monitoring and evaluation, implementation science or epidemiology research, or fluency in Swahili highly desirable.
  • Candidate must be willing to live and work in low-resource settings for up to 75% of the time.

Additional Information:

As this job requires living and working In Tanzania, working hours will differ by day to accommodate communication with US based researchers. While this cannot be predicted early, work hours will not exceed 37.5 total each week.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
