Job Description:

The University Counselor/University Counselor II works as a member of the Student Health and Counseling Services team with the staff of the University Counseling Service, the Student Health Center, and the Office of Health Promotion to provide comprehensive primary medical, counseling/ psychological and health promotion services to students at Washington and Lee. Assists students with a wide range of counseling concerns, including academic success, life management, brief psychotherapy, crisis management and emotional and psychiatric illness, both through direct services and outreach activities. The University Counselor/University Counselor II participates in a shared call schedule to maintain 24/7 counseling availability for students. This is a 10 month position (mid-August to mid-June).

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in a shared call schedule to maintain 24/7 availability for students when the University (UG and Law) is in session.

  • Provides individual and group therapy to undergraduate and law students regarding a wide range of concerns including academic success, life management, brief psychotherapy, crisis management and emotional and psychiatric illness. Direct services account for approximately 65-80% of the counselor’s time.

  • Documents all clinical contacts appropriately in student Counseling Center records; enters appropriate encounter information in scheduling/utilization tracking software system; conducts and documents all clinical activities in accordance with professional standards, including pertinent privacy standards.

  • Counselor is a member of Student Health and Counseling Services within the Division of Student Affairs, and participates as appropriate professionally in University service and the professional activities of the department and division. These may include development and presentation of ongoing training, education and health promotion programs for the University community, advising student organizations, supervising student organization activities and budgets, serving on University committees or advisory groups, attending meetings that address student life issues and other activities that support the mission of the department and Student Affairs (e.g. participating in orientation activities, attending programs or events planned by the Division, etc.). These indirect services account for approximately 20-35% of the University Counselor’s time.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:

A master’s degree in counseling or clinical social work, or a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, and appropriate licensure/license eligible in Virginia (LPC/LCSW or Clinical Psychologist) is required, with at least two years of pertinent clinical experience. Knowledge and experience in psychological and developmental needs of the college population, alcohol and other substance abuse problems, diversity and multicultural issues, sexual assault, and eating disorders are essential. Experience and/or clinical interest helping students heal from racial trauma and race-based stress is essential. Excellent clinical, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary. Must possess the ability to work effectively as a team member within the organizational structure of the Student Health and Counseling Services and the University community.

Types of Work: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
