Job Summary

The Director, Whitaker College of Engineering Academic Advising provides strategic leadership, short- and long-term planning for the academic advising unit, and supports campus-wide planning and initiatives related to advising. Develops advising practices and policies that enhance the student experience. Contributes to the development and implementation of campus-wide Advisor training efforts; acts as a mentor and trainer, and evaluates the effectiveness of the advising unit. The Director of Academic Advising is a leadership role with managerial oversight over a team of Academic Advisors.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

• Provides guidance in academic and personal development in a collaborative and mentoring environment.

• Translates strategic and tactical business plans into operational plans. Fosters interaction between advisors and students in a supportive atmosphere where students will achieve self-sufficiency while implementing their educational goals to reach degree completion.

• Establishes the direction, goals, and implementation strategy, and policies of the unit. Partners with College/Unit to advocate for student needs related to enrollment management and degree progression.

• Advises senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects.

• Manages & supervises a team of professional advisors and administrative support staff to include recruitment, assignment of duties, performance evaluation, and training.

• Maintains regular communication and meetings with other Advising Directors and serves as primary liaison to the AVP for University Advising Services.

• Develops and supports the ongoing delivery of a new advisor training program, and provides professional development opportunities for Academic Advisors.

• Participates in campus and community recruitment and outreach events (such as: Eagle Expo, Say Yes to the Nest, Weeks of Welcome, and State College partnerships).

Other Duties:

• Conducts comprehensive advising duties as needed.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in higher education and student affairs, counselor education, psychology or closely related field.

Ten years of professional full-time experience working in an academic advising environment.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of professional full-time experience supervising professional staff in a higher education environment.

Experience using academic advising-related technology, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, or Florida Shines.

Experience with Workday Student.

Preference will be given to candidates with Engineering program knowledge and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced knowledge of business and management principles and practices involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources as applied to public institutions.

Knowledge of FERPA, state statutes, and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.

Knowledge of theoretical models of student development, academic advising, and development advising.

Employee development, performance management skills and the ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.

Skill in problem solving, mediation, and dispute resolution.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.

Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain programs, policies, and procedures that support academic advising needs and student interests.

Ability to take initiative, plan, organize, and coordinate work in various situation when numerous and diverse demands are involved.

Ability to establish and maintain a positive rapport with a University staff, faculty, students, and general public.

Ability to utilize data and information to make decisions and projections.

Salary Range:

$70,000 - $72,000
