Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

This position requires working with PI’s and other laboratory personnel to perform rodent surgery (spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cannulate spinal canal to sample CSF, and catheterization), perfusion and tissue dissection (both sterile and non-sterile), performing rodent surgeries, monitoring animal recovery acutely after surgery, required institutional record keeping, daily monitoring of animals after surgery, performing behavioral assays (motor, cognition, and pain), delivery of experimental drugs, and preparing the animals for in vivo MRI imaging. The position also requires analysis of material using molecular biology techniques, including Western blotting, DNA / RNA extraction from tissue and cells, qPCR, cryostat sectioning of tissue, double-labelled florescent immunohistochemistry, light, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, cell culture, and data entry into Microsoft Excel.

Cascading Goals are as follows: Demonstrate skills in molecular biology; Demonstrate experience with surgical procedures from pre-operative OR preparation to post-op follow-up care of the animals; Demonstrates knowledge and familiarity with all local, state, & federal laws and regulations, and all laboratory regulatory agency requirements; Demonstrate initiative and skills in lab organization including management of supplies, ordering reagents, and procuring animals

Minimum Hiring Standards

1) Experience with preparing for and performing rodent survival surgical skills and associated institutional record keeping.
2) General laboratory biochemical and molecular experimental procedures.
3) Ability to work in a diverse environment required
4) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required

Preferred Hiring Standards

Master’s degree preferred
