Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Physical Geography



Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Physical Geography in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 503632), to commence on August 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. The appointment rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The Department of Geography, established in 1931, is the first university-level geography department in Hong Kong. The 2021 QS World University Ranking rated the Department the 11th among the world’s top 200 universities in the subject of geography. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate, taught postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes in human and physical geography with an interdisciplinary orientation. Its team of 19 full-time professoriate staff, more than 30 research postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows, is actively engaged in cutting-edge research. The Department’s scholarly activities are well supported by a map library and four modern specialized laboratories. More information of the Department can be obtained at https://www.geog.hku.hk/ .

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Physical Geography or relevant fields with specialization in one or more of the related sub-fields of climatology, hydrology, geomorphology, and remote sensing. They should have extensive research and teaching experience at the tertiary level, with a strong track record in reputable research grants and publications. The appointee is expected to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise research students, conduct research in the related fields, and assist in administration.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
