Outreach Coordinator and Mental Health Counselor, Focus on Serving BIPOC Students
Job Summary The Outreach Coordinator and Mental Health Counselor, Focus on Serving BIPOC Students will provide leadership in the ongoing development and implementation of culturally inclusive and innovative mental health outreach to meet undergraduate, graduate, and law student needs. As with all Counseling Services staff, the Outreach Coordinator and MH Counselor provides generalist mental health assessment and counseling services to all undergraduate, law, and graduate students. The successful candidate will also have a specific focus on working with historically underrepresented students including Black/African American, Indigenous/American Indian, Latinx, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Multiracial, and other Students of Color. The successful candidate will have an understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education and the workplace. This will be combined with a comprehensive understanding of the lived experiences of racially and ethnically diverse students, particularly in predominantly white institutions. They will have the skills and experience to provide culturally responsive care and will collaborate with campus and community partners to engage in meaningful advocacy, psycho-educational outreach, and clinical intervention designed to promote student success and well-being. Additionally, this position requires strong generalist clinical skills to assess and intervene with a wide range of presenting student concerns within a time-limited treatment model. The Outreach Coordinator and MH Counselor conducts initial assessments, group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, risk assessment, consultation and referrals. Service provision includes face-to face and tele-mental health services to students regarding problems relating to stress, developmental issues, career, academics, interpersonal concerns, trauma and other mental health concerns. Administrative Functions (20%)
- Develop, coordinate, and conduct multi-culturally oriented and inclusive needs assessment, outreach programming, training, and workshops to students, staff, and faculty to support student mental health and holistic well-being.
- Collaborate with Student Life staff, faculty, and administrators to provide support for historically underserved student populations including Black/African American, Indigenous/First Nations, Latinx, Asian American/Pacific Islander, multi-racial and other students of color, first generation students and/or international students.
- Provide mental health consultation for campus departments and organizations, with a focus on multicultural inclusivity and cross-culturally relevant programming. Increase campus understanding and support for the mental health needs of historically underserved or marginalized students.
- Provide personal counseling services via time-limited individual, group and marital/couples therapy modalities. This includes crisis intervention, psycho-therapeutic, situational, relational, and developmental counseling.
- Provide assessment and diagnostic services related to developing effective treatment plans and making appropriate referrals of student clients; serve as an advocate and as a liaison in the referral of students to on- and off-campus resources.
- Provide consultation services for students, faculty, parents and staff related to psychological issues. For example, responds to calls from faculty, staff, students and parents who are concerned about students-at-risk or students failing academically.
- Provide academic counseling focusing primarily on the psychological issues involved in academic success (e.g. assertiveness, time management, study skills, focus, communication skills, etc.).
Administrative Functions (20%)
- Manage Counseling Services website and social media content in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Services and with support of the Administrative Specialist.
- Maintain appropriate and timely documentation (e.g. clinical notes) for all services, using the Counseling Service’s electronic health records system.
- Attend weekly staff meetings; participate in regular supervision or consultation regarding cases; maintain knowledge of ethical and legal standards of care; provide all services in keeping with these standards. Obtain relevant continuing education to maintain license and develop professional skills.
- Conferred Master’s degree or Doctoral degree in social work, counseling, psychology or a closely related field.
- Licensed to practice independently or eligible for license within two years of the start of employment in the State of Oregon as an LCSW, Psychologist, LPC, or LMFT. If not licensed, must be registered as a resident or intern with the appropriate Oregon licensing board prior to start date.
- Minimum two years experience providing clinical services in mental health settings.
- Evidence of sustained pursuit of knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse populations.
- Sensitivity to and demonstrated experience working cross-culturally with clients of ethnically/racially diverse backgrounds; students with varying gender identities and sexual orientations; international students; and students with multiple intersecting identities.
- Evidence of strong self-awareness of how one’s own identities and life experiences impact their counseling strategies and interactions with students.
- Experience and readiness to provide effective mental health support outreach programs to students, faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated experience and/or training in designing and conducting needs assessment to inform outreach programming efforts.
- Experience and/or interest in providing group counseling, including both process oriented and skill building groups.
- Mental health assessment and treatment skills; listening skills; interviewing skills.
- Ability to provide effective personal, academic, career and crisis counseling.
- Ability to communicate effectively through writing and speaking.
- Ability to maintain appropriate and timely documentation, in keeping with clinical, ethical and legal parameters.
- Interest in engaging fully in the typical work of a college counseling center, including short-term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation, and training.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
- Knowledge of and adherence to ethical codes and legal statutes related to the practice of college mental health.
- Ability to provide effective general consultation to faculty, staff, students and parents/guardians, and ability to provide clinical consultation to mental health professionals.
Master's degree or a combination of education and
- 2-5 years experience providing clinical services in mental health settings.
- Experience providing clinical services in a college mental health setting or with college age young adults.
- Knowledge of college student developmental issues and needs, including mental health issues and academic success strategies.
- Familiarity and experience in the professional use of social media for educational purposes.
- Salary Range $50,000 - $62,000 DOE

- Full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
- 10 to 11 months annually
- Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm.
- Occasionally evening and weekend hours may be necessary for crisis response or outreach programming.
