Following a review of skills and experience against minimum qualifications, the successful candidate will be hired into either the Network Administrator of Network Engineer level.

The Network Administrator's mission is to maintain a reliable, secure and efficient data communications network. The primary focus of this position is to design, build, support, install, maintain, troubleshoot and optimize the campus routing and switching systems. The Network Administrator will also be able to deploy, maintain, configure and monitor all other active network equipment, including wireless technologies, in order to ensure the 24x7x365 running of a smooth network operation.

In addition to the duties listed above, if the successful candidate is hired into the Network Engineer level, they will also be responsible for all active network equipment, including wireless, data center and information security technologies, while serving as lead subject matter expert in the area of routing and switching. The candidate should be able to design, build, implement, monitor, maintain, and optimize solutions to support the current networking infrastructure while simultaneously anticipating the future needs of the University.

Both levels take direction from the Assistant Director, Network and Telephony, and work collaboratively and willingly with members of Network and Telephony, Systems and Operations, Technology Support, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and other staff in Library and Information Technology and/or other university departments.

Job Duties:
The Network Administrator:

  • Monitors and supports daily network operations, on both wired and wireless networks.
  • Provides installation assistance and supports our campus-wide high density wireless expansion.
  • Continuously monitors, using Slack, Akips, Monitis, Nagios, Airwave and/or other tools, network functionality and responds promptly and appropriately to outage notifications.
  • Configures and maintains network equipment, including but not limited to, Cisco switches & routers, Aruba wireless controllers & access points, and/or Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Provides mentoring, supervision, guidance and instruction to our student employees.
  • Performs physical installation of network cabling and associated equipment, which will include punching down wires, terminating jacks, crimping ends on Cat5/5e/6/6a cables, mounting access points and similar equipment.
  • Provides troubleshooting and resolution of general network issues. Provides level 2 & 3 support in area of expertise: routing and switching issues.
  • Plans, develops, tests, implements, and documents new hardware as well as enhancements to the existing hardware for the physical and data security systems that comprise the campus network.
  • Serves as a leading contributor in the planning, development, testing, and implementation of new solutions as well as enhancements to the existing infrastructure for the systems related to the area of expertise: routing and switching issues.
  • Participates in the planning and development of projects and applications throughout the university that require network involvement, experience and/or integration.
  • Provides detailed training and instruction for the transfer of procedures and knowledge to other Library and IT staff, as well as to the campus community at large in area of expertise: routing and switching.
  • Organizes and maintains informational and procedural documentation for the network team.
  • Collaborates with other members of the team as well as key members of other groups within Library and IT to ensure network projects and changes are appropriately planned and communicated to the rest of the organization and campus community.
  • Maintains supportive, professional relationships with end users by providing courteous, responsive service to the campus community, including our colleagues in Library & Information Technology.
  • Stays up-to-date with current trends and developments in networking, information security and telecommunications.
  • Collaborates with outside vendors and/or contractors to plan, support, troubleshoot and/or implement the technology that makes up the campus network.
  • Participates in the planning and execution of semi-annual disaster recovery testing and remediation.
  • Utilizes TeamDynamix to track ticket entries, progress and resolution; for project updates and time tracking; and change management requests.
  • Organizes, maintains and ensures availability of stock networking hardware, cabling, tools, labels, etc.
  • Ensures the asset management database for the networking team remains accurate and up-to-date.
  • Follows documented outage notification and change control procedures.
  • Participates in overnight on-call rotation.
  • Protects, respects and maintains the confidentiality of information held within or transferred across the University's technological resources.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.

    If hired at the Network Engineer level, the candidate will perform all of the above outlined duties as well as:

  • Provides support for information security systems.
  • Actively participates in the planning, implementation and subsequent support of Bucknell's campus-wide high density wireless expansion.
  • Identifies and integrates software automation tools to assist with the management of the campus network.
  • Builds, makes modifications to and maintains the configurations of network equipment, including but not limited to, Cisco switches & routers, Aruba wireless controllers & access points, and Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves level 2 & 3 network, wireless and information security issues.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the planning, development, testing, and implementation of new solutions as well as enhancements to the existing infrastructure for the physical and virtual systems that comprise the campus network.
  • Takes a leading role in the network's design, capacity management, and detailed equipment engineering for network expansion. Identifies potential network issues and risks, and provides workable technical solutions to mitigate such risks.
  • Ensures all informational and procedural network documentation remains complete and up to date.
  • Takes a leading role in the planning and development of projects, events and other applications throughout the university that require network involvement, experience and/or integration.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to remain up-to-date with current trends and developments in networking, information security, wireless and telecommunications.
  • Researches, identifies and evaluates new products and services as appropriate to enhance, improve or optimize campus networking, wireless and information security operations.
  • Frequently collaborates with outside vendors and/or contractors to plan, support, troubleshoot and/or implement the technology that makes up the campus network.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    To qualify for either level, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Solid understanding of and experience with the IP protocol suite, including the Physical, Data Link and Network layers
  • Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and creative problem solving
  • Demonstrated experience with physical (layer 1) networking, for instance, installing network racks and/or cable tray; cable termination (RJ45 ends, jacks and/or punch-down blocks); routing copper & fiber optic cables through cable management systems, uplinking devices such as wireless access points and network switches
  • Demonstrated experience with the Cisco IOS, IOS XE and/or NX OS operating systems
  • Experience racking and cabling networking equipment
  • Willingness to work closely and amicably with a diverse group of individuals including students, faculty, administrators, and support staff who possess a wide variety of technical skills/understanding
  • A self-starter with the ability to fulfill a variety of functions without direct supervision in a dynamic and demanding environment
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Administrative experience with Unix-like, Windows, or Macintosh operating systems
  • Enthusiasm for continued learning

    To be hired into the Network Engineer level, candidates must also have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Eight years combined education and/or experience in designing, installing, operating, and supporting enterprise network
  • In depth knowledge of the IP protocol suite, with expertise in the Physical, Data Link and Network layers
  • Fundamental knowledge of network security practices such as access lists, authentication methods, next-generation firewalls, IPS/IDS, etc.
  • Extensive experience with the physical installation and maintenance of a network, which may include: the installation of racks, cable trays, cabinets, and other related hardware; cable terminations (jacks, 110 blocks, patch panels); routing and/or pulling of fiber and copper cables through conduit and duct banks; and any other aspects of either a copper or fiber optic layer 1 network
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex problems and provide creative solutions
  • Familiarity with IPv6
  • Deep familiarity with industry standard routing, switching and wireless platforms such as Cisco's IOS, IOS XE, NX OS, Aruba's OS or another vendor's equivalent operating system
  • Solid understanding of wireless networking fundamentals, for instance: protocols, authentication types, radio frequencies, etc.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, networking, information security, information technology or a related field
  • CCENT, CCNA or similar certifications
  • Experience installing/configuring a wireless solution such as Aruba, Ruckus, Cisco, etc.
  • Knowledge of wireless networking fundamentals
  • Familiarity with Aruba wireless networking equipment
  • Familiarity with Palo Alto firewalls
  • Familiarity with VOIP and associated protocols
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools
  • ACMA or similar certifications

    Candidates for the Network Engineer level may have the following preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Cisco networking equipment and configuration
  • Familiarity with Aruba wireless networking equipment
  • CCNA, CCNP or similar certifications
  • ACMA or similar certifications
  • Familiarity with Palo Alto firewalls
  • Familiarity with VOIP and associated protocols
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools
  • The ability to write simple scripts for task automation

    Physical Demands:
  • Ability to differentiate colors.
  • Ability to climb ladders and perform over-head work.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift moderate loads (~30lbs) unassisted, heavier loads (~70lbs) with assistance.
  • May be sometimes required to work in areas that are not temperature controlled.
  • May need to work in areas under construction and/or dusty locations.
  • Must be able to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.

    Other Requirements:
  • Available during non-office and emergency hours to respond to critical needs of the University, which may include some evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Exempt employees are required to work as much time as is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the position without additional compensation, even if the work is performed beyond “normal” work hours.
