The Department of Visual Arts at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor position in Computer Animation and Game Art with appointment to begin August 16, 2021.

Position

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline, and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will teach include Introduction to 3D Modeling, Introduction to 3D Animation, 3D Character Modeling, 3D Environment Modeling, 3D Rigging and Animation, Lighting and Composition, and BFA Capstone 3D Animation. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

The Department

The Department of Visual Arts serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate art majors and 60 graduate students, with 36 full-time and 80+ lecturer faculty. The department offers both a BA in Art and BFA in Art with 13 areas of concentration, in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with 9 areas of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and presents a full range of fine arts and professional programs including a nationally recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. graduate studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from campus. Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (MFA, PhD) in computer animation, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution, or significant sustained industry experience in cinematics, and/or game development

  • Evidence of excellent technical skills in industry standard practices to instruct undergraduate and graduate students in Unreal Engine and related software/hardware used in game development and/or virtual production and/or virtual reality

  • Evidence of a strong record of achievement with significant accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population, including first‐generation college students

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively within a culturally diverse community of CSUF students, faculty, staff, and administrators

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of UE Blueprints, and Simulations, Rigging/Animation or Mocap/Retargeting as it relates to cinematics, games, and/or 3D computer animation production

  • Evidence of a current professional practice in virtual production or game engines for cinematic storytelling and/or experimental art

  • Evidence of professional practice using Python and/or C++ scripting for animation tools and game engines

  • Experience and/or interest in developing new curriculum in game development and/or virtual production

  • Familiarity with Autodesk Maya, Substance, Houdini and/or Zbrush

    Finalists
  • Over a one-day period, finalists will be invited to participate in a series of interviews, presentations, and talks via Zoom
  • Finalists will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation. Please have these ready for the referents to submit should you move forward to this phase of the search. On the References page of the online application, enter information and email addresses for three referents who will provide a confidential letter of reference for your application. A request via email along with information on uploading the letter will be sent. You will be able to verify that each letter has been received by CSUF by logging back into the recruitment system.     Multiple positions may be hired from this recruitment based on the strength of the applicant pool.

    Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
