The Department of Technology and Society (DTS) at the State University of New York (SUNY) Korea invites applications and nominations of highly qualified individuals to apply for the position of department chair.

DTS at SUNY Korea is an extension of the Stony Brook University (SBU) department of the same name in the SBU College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, offering the same curriculum and degrees. DTS at SUNY Korea has a diverse international faculty of 12 that is a multi-disciplinary blend of natural, engineering, and social scientists. The department offers a BS and MS in Technological Systems Management and a Ph.D. in Technology, Policy, and Innovation. The position will be filled by January 1, 2022. A start in the Fall semester of 2021 is possible.

This senior level leadership position within the school is intended for candidates who are dedicated to the advancement of undergraduate and graduate education, have a distinguished record of research and professional accomplishment as well as strong leadership and management abilities, and are interested in the technological and societal challenges of advanced and emerging countries.

The department chair responsibilities include but are not limited to: strategically lead the department’s faculty and programs to new levels of visibility and accomplishment; oversee all faculty, students, and managerial aspects of the department’s academic programs in coordination with the administration of SUNY Korea and the home department at SBU; conduct faculty annual performance and tenure reviews of faculty according to department, school, and university policies; provide professional mentoring to faculty at all ranks; prepare (or delegate) the department’s class schedules for every semester, ensuring all faculty teaching loads meet school policy; connect DTS students with industry and coordinate efforts with the school’s recruiting and communication offices to promote the accomplishments of the department to the broader community and prospective students.

The campus of SUNY Korea is located at the Incheon Global Campus (IGC) in Songdo, South Korea. Songdo is a new “smart” city, which is home to more than 15 international organizations such as a branch of the World Bank, several UN offices, and the Green Growth Fund. The IGC hosts SUNY Korea, the University of Utah, George Mason University, and the University of Ghent. Songdo is a high-tech center, emphasizing IT and Biotech, and hosts several other university campuses including Yonsei University, Inha University, and Incheon National University. The opportunities for collaboration are high.

A Ph.D. is required. Applications should include:

  • A cover letter of 3-5 pages outlining leadership experience, research, teaching interests, and commitment to diversity.

  • 2-3 published articles, papers, or other examples of written work.
