University of Utah Health seeks a dynamic, collaborative fundraising professional to serve as the Senior Director of Advancement (SDOA) and seek philanthropic support for the identified priorities of the School of Medicine (SOM), in addition to University of Utah Health’s new building for the medical school. The new medical building complex will serve as the heart of campus, welcome healing, learning, and discovery, educate medical students, and bring world-class health to patients in Utah and beyond. The SDOA will also staff and support several SOM basic sciences departments and ensure advancement representation and support for the Eccles Health Sciences Library (EHSL), the Center for Medical Innovation (CMI). This important and highly visible position will manage relationships with a portfolio of donors who have the capability of making major to principal gifts in the range of $100,000 to $1 million. The SDOA will build philanthropic support by engaging and involving all UU health alumni, faculty, administrators, foundations, corporations, and government agencies. The SDOA will articulate and execute an annual advancement work plan focused on best practices including goals and metrics, and philanthropic priorities, leading to the procurement of private support for the School of Medicine. The SDOA will work with and help staff SOM volunteer advisory boards/committees whose members have the capacity to make significant contributions to the aligned areas. The DOA also works closely with the SOM alumni relations team, the SOM Alumni Association, the SOM academic DOA’s, directors of annual, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, strategic engagement, and prospect research, and colleagues throughout University of Utah Health to build and implement effective strategies and collaborative partnerships that will lead to long-term relationships and significant gift support from prospective benefactors.

This position will report directly to the Senior Executive Director of Advancement (SEDOA) for University of Utah Health Academics Advancement, with a secondary report to the Vice Dean for Education in the School of Medicine.

This position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting Agreement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Plan and implement major gift fundraising in support of areas of emphasis as assigned by the SEDOA and the Vice Dean of the School of Medicine. This includes developing knowledge, understanding, and expertise in the specified programs and research, strategic planning for long term success. The primary focus will be to build a sustainable pipeline of major gift donors.
• Identify, cultivate, solicit, negotiate and steward major gift prospects, primarily medical alumni, and participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management and tracking system and assist with the maintenance of alumni and donor records.
• In consultation with the SEDOA and Vice Dean, submit an annual advancement work plan and budget that includes goals, objectives, strategies, anticipated travel, and metrics for fundraising and professional development and performance management goals. Participate in quarterly assessment of progress toward meeting short- and long-term goals.
• Hire, recruit, train, and mentor SOM Directors of Advancement (DOA’s) by setting clear direction and priorities, provide frequent opportunities for professional learning and growth while emphasizing retention as a means of increasing the capacity and expertise of the team.
• Guide specific fundraising strategies, reviewing, and suggesting changes when needed. Ensure accountability for fundraising measures of the team. Evaluate the performance of direct reports and assist in performance management and evaluation of other advancement personnel.
• Lead by example; foster a work environment that recognizes and rewards cross-functional collaboration and team-based efforts. Celebrate current achievements and set clear expectations for future success.
• Identify high-capacity UU Health alumni and prospects in an assigned geographical region to secure philanthropic support. Closely collaborate with the other academic and clinical DOA’s on funding priorities and proposal development.
• Build a strong relationship with the Vice Dean and faculty leaders throughout the School of Medicine through personal meetings and maintaining a strong presence within the School’s facilities. Coordinate the participation of the Vice Dean, alumni, physicians, administrators, academic leaders, volunteers, and advancement staff in fundraising and stewardship activities.
• Participate in administrative and faculty meetings within the school as well as administrative and staff meetings in the office of advancement.
• Partner with the UU Health Advancement, the SOM alumni relations team, and alumni association, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, prospect management, communications, events, and stewardship to build a robust advancement program. Serve as a liaison to volunteers conducting fundraising activities on behalf of the SOM.
• Prepare written proposals, endowment agreements, informational materials, and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors to secure gifts in close coordination with the UU Health Advancement Strategic Engagement team. Work with the director of stewardship to coordinate stewardship plans for donors at the leadership gift level, ensure endowment reports are completed on time; research any questions related to the reports.
• Monitor the gift accounts including endowed and expendable funds to ensure that they are being managed in accordance with the donor’s gift agreements.
• Seek appropriate training opportunities, including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift planning techniques, and partner with the director of planned giving to build that program.
• Provide fundraising training opportunities for advancement staff, academic leaders, and volunteers.
• Submit regular reports to the SEDOA and Vice Dean, and other institutional leaders as required.
• Responsibilities require considerable professional independence, personal initiative, and the ability to effectively and quickly respond to a variety of situations involving university constituencies.
• Relationship development and management will be a key requirement of the position and helping to build a culture of collaboration and community.
• Also responsible for other duties assigned by the SEDOA.

NON-COMPETE CLAUSE
Recognize that the duties performed as a Senior Director of Advancement are special, unique, and of an extraordinary character. As consideration for the compensation to be paid to by the University, and throughout the term of employment by the University and for a period of six (6) months following the termination of employment, for any reason, no engagement will be permitted within the State of Utah, in any professional activities as a development officer or in an advancement capacity within the hospital or health care industries, whether as an employee, individual, consultant, partner or otherwise.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, clinical field, or related area, or equivalency; nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required.

Completion of hospital provided supervisory training within one year of employment may also be required.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

 PREFERENCES:

• Master’s degree is preferred.
• At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, preferably in academic medicine, with a proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership gifts at the six and seven-figure levels. Equivalent development/advancement experience outside of higher education may substitute for educational institution experience.
• Meaningful experience in or knowledge of all key development areas (major, annual and planned giving, and corporate and foundation relations). A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation, and management. A track record of success leading a development operation.
• Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate, and steward strong relationships with alumni, donors, and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning the donor’s passions and goals with the institution.
• The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, humor, and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of chairs, faculty, senior advancement leadership, colleagues, and other constituents.
• Strong interpersonal skills and customer service. Poised, professional manner with the ability to express oneself clearly and empathetically in interactions with others in all forms of communications, verbal and written, one-on-one and group, etc. Ability to communicate directly and professionally that engages dialogue in a manner that resolves differences.
• Ability to work independently within a complex, multi-divisional, and multi-departmental environment, problem-solve, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Takes responsibility and initiative to set and meet the goals, objectives, and obligations while representing the mission, visions, and values of the organization.
• Intrinsically motivated with demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and strong attention to detail. Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast-paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner.
• An approach to management that brings out the best in staff and yields pride, ownership, and a sense of team effort
• Experience with strategic planning is desirable and preferred.
