Position Summary and Responsibilities
Vassar College is seeking a retail associate (Administrative Support) to work in our college owned and operated store. This position is full-time for the full year, and is eligible for college staff benefits, including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.


  • Clean and keep neat displays. This includes the sales floor area and register areas;
  • Price and display merchandise;
  • Unpack boxes and shelving of books;
  • Perform accounting support and monitor account balances for various vendors. Provide results to the accounting team;
  • Run a cash terminal, which includes giving accurate change, and cashing out at the end of a shift;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule varies: Monday - Friday 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., or 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Some holidays & special events required.

  • Several years of retail experience and one year of training or experience in general clerical work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate an ability to perform the duties;
  • Ability to meet people courteously and pleasantly;
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Experience with book keeping or accounting support preferred;
  • Must be able to move, position and place objects weighing up to and including 50 pounds;
  • Basic experience with computers and point of sale devices;
  • Ability to perform routine typing duties. Familiarly with basic Word and Excel is a plus;
  • Ability to maintain a mature, problem-solving demeanor, during sometimes stressful situations;
  • Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple, competing priorities.

Must be flexible and able to work some evenings, some Saturdays and some holidays to support college events. Must have excellent customer service skills, perform work with accuracy, and be able to work efficiently and effectively under demanding conditions, such as special events and back-to-school rush.
