Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy at Eastern University invites applications for a part-time, one-year visiting lecturer position in Philosophy to begin August 2021. AOS: Open. AOC: Ancient Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion. Teaching load is 3 courses per semester. Ability to teach both introductory courses and an advanced course in Ancient Philosophy required. Ability to teach bioethics and/or aesthetics preferred. This is a 9 month, non-tenure track appointment.

Applicants should have PhD in Philosophy or anticipate defending their doctoral dissertation by the summer of 2021. Applicants must have a strong record of teaching undergraduate students.

Position Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will include teaching the following courses: Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Logic, Faith and Philosophy (Philosophy of Religion), and an upper division seminar in Ancient Philosophy. Ability to teach an advanced course in Bioethics and/or Aesthetics preferred.

Additional responsibilities will include mentoring students, engaging in the scholarly life of the department, attending and participating in Philosophical Society events, and providing service to the department and university. Applicants should be willing to participate in the academic community of Eastern University and the faculty of friends within the College of Arts and Humanities. In addition, as a Lecturer in a Christian liberal arts university, the successful applicant should be willing and able to support the integrated intellectual, moral, aesthetic, and spiritual formation of students.

Applicants should possess an earned doctorate in Philosophy, evidence of outstanding teaching, and a record of scholarly and professional engagement suitable to their experience in the field.  Applicants need a strong scholarly interest, as well as a passion for the vision of liberal arts education outlined in the position responsibilities.
