The Search

Bentley University (“Bentley” or “the University”)—a private business university known for excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and research— seeks a visionary, creative, and collaborative information technology leader as Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO). The CIO will provide strategic direction and technological vision to stakeholders throughout the University, influencing and shaping the plans, tactics, productivity, and educational footprint of this exceptional institution. 

This is an exciting moment of transition for Bentley, as Dr. E. LaBrent Chrite has recently been appointed the ninth president of the University and the first Black president in the institution’s 104-year-history. As a member of his Cabinet, the next CIO will have an opportunity to contribute to the President’s work ahead in guiding the institution to an even more successful and impactful future, building on the strengths of its academic offerings and identifying further opportunities for innovation.

Located just 10 miles west of Boston, Bentley offers a unique slate of academic programs that integrate a rigorous business education with the arts and sciences. This melding of disciplines provides a distinctive learning context for its approximately 4,200 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, who develop the critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills necessary to lead successful, meaningful careers. The next CIO will advocate for the technological solutions that will enhance the academic mission and improves the overall operational effectiveness and efficiency of the University  The CIO will foster innovation and excellence through the management of the information technology strategies, policies, and projects – all in an effort to support learning, teaching, and research.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, broadly knowledgeable IT leader and highly effective communicator with demonstrated strengths in infrastructure, systems applications, cybersecurity, and data governance, and management of projects, processes, and personnel. Along with successful senior-level experience as an information technology leader, preferably in an academic setting of comparable complexity, the CIO will bring an expansive vision of the potential of IT to support and enhance the mission of the University.

The CIO oversees an annual capital budget of over $2 million, an operating budget of over $22 million, and a 68-person staff organized into the following areas: Academic Technology (ATC), Data Management & Application Services, Project and Vendor Management Office, Business Administration and Budget Management, Data Analytics, Office of the Information Security Officer and the Office of the Deputy CIO including Client Services, Networks and Telecommunications, Infrastructure, and Cloud Services. As a part of the recent IT strategy, the university’s primary systems have migrated to a modern cloud-based architecture and associated ecosystem. Bentley has also adopted and implemented a cloud-based SaaS platform as its unified HR, finance and student system.
