Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Residential Programs is responsible for the daily operations of the Hall Staffing and Residential College programs in the department and plays an integral role in the leadership, direction, and vision of Residential Life at Northern Arizona University. The Director is pivotal in working collaboratively with all Residential Life staff, and other campus partners to fully enact the department’s mission statement: To provide welcoming vibrant communities that foster personal growth and enhance the student experience.

An ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated a true commitment to inclusive communities and intercultural competency and development. As a departmental leader, the Director of Residential Programs contributes to and helps develop a robust residential education program for approximately 8,000 on-campus students within an educational area of 16 buildings/complexes. The Director provides guidance and support for the staff working within these halls and administrative staff in the central office location. Residential Life at NAU is committed to the total development of the student within an inclusive community through community standards, community experiences, intentional conversations, and encouraged personal growth and academic success.

This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs/Residential Life.

Specific Responsibilites:

Hall Staffing and Programs

  • Supervise three (3) Assistant Directors of Hall Staffing and Programs to ensure appropriate program operation that creates a high-quality residential experience for on campus students as well as staff. Indirect supervision of 16 Residence Hall Directors, 11 Graduate Assistants, and 170 Resident Assistants.
  • Ensure dynamic and appropriate training of hall staff.
  • Ensure quality professional development programs are implemented that gives opportunities to all Residential Life staff to improve themselves and the profession.
  • Create and facilitate all staff departmental meetings.
  • Manage appropriate evaluation cycles that promote staff development and accountability.

Residential Colleges

  • Direct supervision of an Assistant Director of Residential Colleges.
  • Indirect supervision of two (2) Coordinators of Residential Colleges, as well as four (4) Graduate Assistants.
  • Indirect supervision of 23 Residential College Ambassadors.
  • Coordinate program goals with Deans/Associate Deans of the seven (7) distinct colleges.
  • Coordinate outreach to faculty liaisons/fellows which includes program goals, assessments, and operational items.
  • Work with the Student Affair Strategic Initiatives staff to review assessment practices and results for the program.

Safety and Security

  • Ensure all staff are trained on safety and security policies.
  • Collaborate and consult with partners on campus including, but not limited to NAUPD, Clery Act compliance officer, Emergency Management, Environmental Safety, etc.
  • Ensure all staff are fully trained on safety protocol and the Lenel Access System.

Compliance

  • Prepare compliance reports related to Title IX and Clery Act.
  • Coordinate with appropriate offices trainings related to Title IX, Violence Against Women's Act, Clery Act, etc.
  • Prepare, disseminate, and train Residential Life staff on appropriate on call response in compliance with NAU guidance and procedures.

Communication and Partnerships

Establish and maintain effective relationships with departments across the university, and specifically in Student Affairs including:

  • Health Promotions
  • Office of Inclusion
  • Office of Indigenous Student Support
  • LEAP - Leadership, Engagement, Activities and Peer Mentoring
  • NAU Police Department
  • Counseling Services
  • Campus Health Services
  • Office of the Dean of Students

Departmental and University Committee Involvement

  • Serve on committees that support residential students, transitional programs, and retention and assessment efforts affecting residential students.
  • Serve on a minimum of two departmental committees.
  • Serve on program specific committees as needed.

Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development opportunities and trainings that enhance performance and contributes to the Department, University and/or Profession.
  • Attend and/or present at local, regional, and/or national workshops/conferences.
  • Contribute to Residential Life's vision, mission, and values through participation in strategic planning, department goal setting, and determining hall staffing priorities and initiatives.
  • Stay current in higher education and student development trends and best practices.
  • Develop an individual professional development plan in consultation with the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs/Residential Life; serve as a role model relative to the professional development of full-time, graduate, and central office staff.

General Administrative Functions and Leadership:

  • Respond to voice, electronic and US mail in a timely manner.
  • Maintains responsibility for administering and managing department budgets to include setting priorities for budgets and monitoring and approving budget expenditures.
  • Analyzes data to evaluate the efficiency of day to day tasks within the departments and ensures all objectives are being met. Determines outcomes and gives guidance to subordinates on how to meet goals.
  • Authorizes, within parameters, necessary actions to remove obstacles to success.
  • Participate in and assist with the annual departmental training of new graduate assistant and full-time staff members (Foundations Training) as well as student staff training.
  • Participate in departmental leadership team meetings, training, and professional development sessions.
  • Manage programmatic and student outreach efforts utilizing StarRez, Lenel, Salesforce and Maxient.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree,
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience performing administrative functions in a residential life operation, and
  • Three or more years of experience supervising full-time, professional staff, or
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Personnel, Administration, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
  • Experience programming in a higher education residential environment.
  • Experience working with student leadership groups.
  • Experience with budget administration.
  • Experience working with a Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary.
  • Experience with program planning and assessment.
  • Ability to apply student developmental concepts to program practices and staff development.
