Job Description

The Advanced Flight Simulation Center at the Daytona Beach Campus is currently accepting applications for the position of Flight Simulation Engineer.

The Flight Simulation Engineer provides engineering services, technical expertise, and team skills necessary to maintain the high quality performance of the Flight Simulation and Training Device (FSTD) fleet at the Daytona Beach campus. Provides engineering services and technical support to ensure fleet compliance with regulatory requirements and pilot training needs. Will participate in the design/development, acquisition, relocation, installation, operation, and management of Flight Simulation and Training Devices (FSTDs) and the Distributed Simulation Network and will assist with the maintenance of the Simulator-Quality Management System (S-QMS), as well as the recruitment, training, and supervision of center personnel.

Provides scheduled and unscheduled engineering and support to FSTDs and associated systems:

  • Conducts analysis, review, and resolution of critical network performance and functionality problems.
  • Installs and configures data network infrastructure, maintaining documentation and critical operational information.
  • Determines Root Cause (RC) and resolves discrepancies reported by training crews, the FAA, and support staff.
  • Diagnoses and isolates problems to component or sub-assembly level.
  • Replaces or repairs components to return FSTDs to regulatory compliance.
  • Performs calibration, adjusting, and tuning of FSTDs and related systems.
  • Develops, installs, and maintains visual scenery database.
  • Performs special redesign and enhancement projects.


Performs administrative duties:

  • Conducts FSTD fleet data network needs assessments to develop data network designs, cost structures, and implementation schedules in support of fleet requirements.
  • Develops FSTD fleet data network designs, strategies, and sound network management practices.
  • Researches flight simulation and data management systems industry trends, analyzes, and recommends value-added technologies, tools, and methodologies in support of the Center’s operational objectives.
  • Executes and enforces operational plans, policies, and procedures to ensure high availability, supportability, and manageability of the FSTD Fleet and related data communications services.
  • Maintains FSTD fleet server and Distributed Simulation Network.
  • Maintains FSTD to IG CIGI Interface.
  • Maintains FSTD fleet Discrepancy Reporting and Certification database.
  • Maintains FSTD fleet Visual Scenery database.
  • Documents and reviews activity in shift, pass down, and Discrepancy Report (DR) logs.
  • Maintains spare parts and tool inventory.
  • Assists in recruiting, tracking, scheduling, and evaluating part-time personnel.
  • Assists in maintaining the Simulator-Quality Management System (SQMS).
  • Assists in the acquisition of tooling, test equipment, and supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining the support documentation and training library.
  • Liaisons with center stakeholders.
  • Participates in shift turnover meetings.


Performs testing and preventative maintenance on FSTDs:

  • Performs daily preflight inspections of FSTDs and visual systems.
  • Performs scheduled and preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Performs quarterly objective and subjective testing.
  • Runs diagnostics on FSTDs and visual systems.
  • Services hydraulic and electric motion and control loading systems.
  • Performs scheduled calibration, tuning, and adjusting of FSTDs and related systems.


Maintains and updates FSTD related hardware and software configurations:

  • Maintains FSTD aircraft systems and avionics hardware configurations.
  • Maintains FSTD and visual scenery software configurations.
  • Performs new and routine software updates to FSTDs and visual scenery databases.
  • Performs software installation and updates to resolve discrepancies.
  • Performs and supports engineering modifications and updates.


Develops Software Programs, Tools, and Utilities:

  • Develops, documents, and maintains software programs, tools, and utilities using industry best practices and standards in support of fleet and network fidelity, federal requirements, and the vision, operational objectives, and mission statement of the university.


Maintains and shares technical expertise:

  • Provides new hire indoctrination and basic training.
  • Provides oversight, direction, and OJT to center staff.
  • Provides assistance and operator training to FSTD crews.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, and vendor schools.


Assists in recruiting, tracking, scheduling, and evaluating part-time personnel.

Qualifications

Analytical skills with an in depth knowledge of information systems and technical expertise with Microsoft operating systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook/email, and Internet end-user applications.

Expert knowledge of FSTD regulations, documentation, software, and utilities.

Expert knowledge of Flight Simulation and Training Devices (FSTDs).

Expert knowledge of Distributed Simulation Networks and related systems.

Expert knowledge of aerodynamics, mechanical assemblies, and electrical circuits.

Expert knowledge of visual scenery development and related software.

Expert knowledge of visual systems configuration and calibration.

Expert knowledge of the Open Flight format software standard.

Strong working knowledge of the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) Protocol.

Strong working knowledge of the Common Image Generator Interface (CIGI) Standard.

Strong working knowledge of Frasca’s Distributed Simulation Interactive (DSI) Protocol.

Strong working knowledge of the SIMNET Protocol for Distributed Simulation.

Strong working knowledge of Air Traffic Management Systems including TIS-B and ADS-B.

Strong working knowledge of Aircraft Integrated Cockpit Systems (ICS).

Strong working knowledge of collimated displays and related hardware and software.

Strong working knowledge of network management, network security, and network test equipment.

Strong working knowledge of local and wide area communication technologies including Ethernet.

Strong working knowledge of routing protocol environments such as TCP/IP, Apple talk, and multicast.

Strong working knowledge of network TCP/IP addressing including DHCP, BOOTP, DNS, and WINS.

Strong working knowledge of the .NET framework windows platform.

Strong working knowledge of programming in Visual Basic, C++, C#, FORTRAN, Java, and HTML.

Strong working knowledge of structured wiring standards, codes, policies, and termination procedures in copper and fiber optic cabled environments.

Working knowledge of client/server environments including UNIX, Novell NetWare, and Microsoft NT.

Strong troubleshooting skills including: servers, routers, switches, hubs, wireless access points, host computers, I/O systems, hydraulic and electric motion, control loading, and IG systems.

Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem solving skills.

Strong Visual Basic, C++, C#, FORTRAN, Java, and HTML programming skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong time management and interpersonal skills.

Above average flying skills and knowledge of aircraft systems, principles of flight, and navigation theory.
