Position Summary

The State University of New York ( SUNY ) is seeking an experienced litigation attorney, preferably with experience handling employment and discrimination matters on behalf of SUNY or another New York State agency. This Associate Counsel position will be located in the SUNY Office of General Counsel at the University at Buffalo Academic Health Center in Buffalo, New York. The University at Buffalo (UB) is a comprehensive public research intensive university. UB’s Academic Health Center includes five schools: Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; School of Dental Medicine; School of Nursing; School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and the School of Public Health and Health Professions. UB has affiliation agreements with several hospital systems in Buffalo but does not operate a SUNY teaching hospital. UB’s School of Dental Medicine operates a diagnostic and treatment clinic regulated under the New York State Public Health Law.

The Associate Counsel will handle a wide range of litigation issues pertaining to the UB Academic Health Center, its relationships with affiliated hospitals and research institutions, and its administrators, faculty, and staff. Those issues include: advising on: student leaves of absence, discipline, dismissal, and appeals; faculty hiring, promotion, tenure, discipline and termination. Other responsibilities may including drafting and negotiating contracts within the context of New York State finance and procurement guidelines.as well as collective bargaining, external auditing, and FOIL . This position will assist in managing UB court litigation, which is primarily handled in court by the NYS Attorney General as trial counsel, and represent UB and UB employees in state and federal administrative agency proceedings. This Associate Counsel may be called upon on occasion to represent UB in court on specific matters.

Key Responsibilities:
•Advising in various student areas dealing with leaves, discipline and dismissal
•Representing UB and UB employees in state and federal administrative agency proceedings as well as, on occasion, in state and federal courts
•Representing UB in employee and student discipline matters; discrimination cases and internal investigations, and with labor and employment issues

Minimum Qualifications

•J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school
•Admission in good standing to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for immediate admission)
•A minimum of eight (8) years of legal experience in litigation

Preferred Qualifications

Litigation and trial experience in on behalf of SUNY or another New York State agency.
