Assistant/Associate Professor in Communication Design

Main Campus - Boston, MA
R07227

The Department of Communications in the Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and Humanities at Simmons University invites applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor in Communication Design. In this tenure-track/tenured position, which will begin Fall 2021, we are seeking a versatile designer comfortable across print and digital media, committed to undergraduate education, and keen to develop courses that meet student needs in a broad communications curriculum that balances theory with contemporary practice. Our degree in Communications currently includes concentrations in Graphic Design, Journalism, and Media Arts, as well as two joint undergraduate programs - one in Public Relations/Marketing Communications and one in Web Design and Development - as well as an interdisciplinary minor in Cinema and Media Studies. In the spring of 2021, we will be launching CompleteDegree@Simmons, an online program in Digital Communications for adult learners and degree completers who identify as women.

Successful candidates will have professional-level digital design skills and be knowledgeable about the current industry standards in design, including its history and methodology. Candidates should have a working understanding of multimedia/transmedia storytelling as well as trends in web design, User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI).

Duties include teaching six courses per year, maintaining an active scholarly or creative agenda, advising students, and serving on committees that advance the mission of the institution. Faculty in the Communications Department contribute to a general education curriculum that stresses leadership, diversity, civic engagement, interdisciplinarity, and self-directed learning. Tenured faculty are expected to chair the department on a rotating basis.

Minimum Qualifications
  • MFA, Ph.D., or other terminal degree in Visual Communications, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Demonstrated record of quality teaching at the college-level beyond teaching assistant.
  • A deep practice of communication design that includes extensive knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • A substantial facility with visual storytelling, web design, User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI), design, motion graphics, data visualization, and other industry standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated scholarship and experience, as well as a record of active participation in professional organizations.

To apply, please:
  • upload your CV and Cover Letter to the online application, and
  • include a link to any online portfolio and/or student work on the 2nd page of the online application (under "websites") that you would like us to review.
