Overview
California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,000 students, of which 81% are first-generation college students and graduates about 5,000 students annually. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution, CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has one of the most diverse student populations of any university in the Inland Empire, and the second highest Hispanic enrollment of all public universities in California. CSUSB employs 467 full-time faculty and offers 48 undergraduate, 35 graduate, and one doctoral degree programs and 14 academic programs with national accreditation.

Typical Activities

This position will teach existing courses and have opportunities to develop new courses based on candidate expertise. The successful applicant will be expected to integrate student learning with research that addresses community needs for Environmental Justice. Strong candidates will articulate how their teaching and research interests have potential for collaborations with campus initiatives to engage the community, such as the Water Resources Institute, the Office of Community Engagement, and/or the Office of Tribal Relations.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.
In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and, e) enhancing the campus identity. Minimum Qualifications

A PhD in Geography or a related field is required by time of appointment. Doctoral students are encouraged to apply if completion of the dissertation is anticipated by time of appointment.
Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies ay CSUSB currently houses three degree programs: Geography, Environmental Studies, and Global Studies. In addition, we offer a certificate in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The internationally award-winning Model United Nations is also housed in the department and serves as a way for students to gain hands-on experience with geopolitics and diplomacy. The department also houses an active chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon and our department student club, Student Association of Geography and Environmental Studies (SAGES).
Beginning in Fall 2020 Semester, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies will be home to new and transformed cutting-edge programs that explore local, state, regional, national and global human and physical geography. Beginning in Fall 2020, the Department will have a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies with two concentrations for students to select from -- an Environmental Sustainability concentration or an Environmental Systems concentration. The Department will continue to house the Bachelor of Arts in Geography that provides a solid foundation of knowledge in the discipline and it will allow students to explore the diversity of topics studied by geographers, including borderlands and migrations, economic and social geography. For the first time in the history of CSUSB, the Department will also house a Bachelor in Global Studies and a minor in Geographic Information Science. Minors in Environmental Studies, Geography, and Global Studies are also available for students to explore.
