Job Summary

The Assistant Head of School reports to the Head of School, is a member of the senior administrative team, and is responsible for the day to day management and supervision of school operations and services.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Administration & Curriculum (70%)

Work closely with the faculty, Head of School, and Department of Education and Child Study. Create teacher schedules. Oversee all curricular programs of the school, ensuring they are in alignment with the school’s mission and philosophy and meet the needs of students and parents. Oversee the annual review of the curriculum, ensuring the K-6 program is sequential and effective. Keep abreast of trends and developments in K-6 education and pedagogy. Take the lead in the creation of curricular programs that utilize the learning resources of the college.

Includes coordinating all aspects of curricular programming with Smith students, staff, and faculty. Oversee IRB-related work at the school. Collaborate with the EDC Department to strengthen connections between them and the school. Work with the Head of School to create and oversee ongoing professional development, and oversee the professional development budget. Oversee and guide the professional development plans of individual teachers. Keep informed of national and global innovations and trends in teaching and learning and share these with faculty and staff. Regularly communicate, to internal and external communities, the highlights of the school’s curriculum and programs. Supervise the school nurse and health and safety programs. Be the first point of contact for and primarily manage student behavior. Share evaluation of the faculty with the Head of School.

Other Functions (30%)

Plan and oversee all fire and safety drills
Write and speak about the programs and activities of the school.
Be one of the first points of contact for parent concerns and questions.
Visit classrooms on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Masters degree in education with an emphasis on elementary education; appropriate teaching experience; knowledge of current educational research and trends in elementary school curriculum and instruction; background and experience in adapting curriculum and instruction for a wide range of learners: familiarity with the uses of technology for educational purposes.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Skills

Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with and provide leadership to a diverse teaching staff; strong organizational skills; ability to balance and accomplish both day-to-day tasks and ongoing, longer term projects and responsibilities.
