The Environmental Health & Safety Department serves to support and maintain a safe and healthy environment for the UNCW community and strives to limit the University’s exposure to risks, including personal, financial, property, and reputational. EH&S provides the internal framework for compliance with safety, health and environmental regulations, as well as the development of emergency preparedness and response initiatives.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

This position supports compliance efforts and the general mission of EH&S. Specific and focused work is in the laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental management areas, including support of regulated waste, chemical hygiene, biological safety, radiation safety, exposure control, and environmental monitoring programs. The position will also aid occupational safety and fire safety efforts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma and demonstrated competence necessary to perform the work

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Bachelors degree in a related scientific or technical field is preferred

The ability to attain technical skills and understanding necessary to operate a variety of survey instruments, sampling devices and tools, and general computer and office software

Must be able to communicate with a variety of clients from housekeepers to principle investigators verbally and through email and written reports

Must be able to operate a variety of detection equipment

A basic understanding of state and federal rules and regulations relating to safety and environmental compliance and a working knowledge of basic chemical properties and hazards is beneficial

HAZWOPER certification, or the ability to complete within one year, is preferred
