About the Opportunity:
The Division of Information Technology Services (ITS) is currently seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Research Cloud Engineer (RCE) within the Research Computing team. This position will be responsible for all-things related to supporting our extensive and diverse research enterprise initiatives. This includes contributing to training, creation of knowledgebase articles, and collaborating with the Customer Experience team to ensure proper support is maintained. Customer Experience is the first line of IT support for the university, and they will escalate to this role/team.

We are looking for a collaborative individual to work closely with the Customer Experience, Digital Studio, Systems & Cloud Services, Network Services, ServiceNow, and Enterprise Application teams to provide the best experience for our growing research environments. The ideal candidate should possess skills in problem solving, training/curriculum building, delegation, and innovative thinking.

Leveraging the extensive high performance computing infrastructure at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC), the RCE will work to develop and deploy private cloud resources to the research community. In collaboration with other MGHPCC partners and major cloud vendors, the RCE will also work to integrate the Northeastern private research cloud infrastructure with commercial cloud resources and regional open-source cloud initiatives, with the goal of building a diverse research cloud platform for the university.

As a member of the larger Research Application Support team, the qualified candidate will provide domain expertise in cloud technologies to best support a diverse range of research projects, interacting directly with faculty and students to support their computational science research across all scientific domains.

To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee may be required to work outside his/her regular working hours and university holidays.

Responsibilities:

Maintenance & Operations
  • Monitor the research cloud infrastructure to ensure the availability and performance SLAs are met.
  • Perform performance tuning when needed.
  • Perform root cause analysis on incidents.
  • Follow incident, change, release, and problem management processes.
  • Review and modify documentation.
  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting on compliance programs

Research Cloud Design & Implementation
  • Contributes to requirements gathering, architecture, design, and implementation of research cloud services
  • Manages development of new research cloud service offerings into service models or constructs service models from existing research cloud service offerings
  • Accountable for the development, documentation, and maintenance of research cloud service offerings
  • Accountable for verifying that research cloud service model meet appropriate compliance/governance requirements in collaboration with the Office of Information Security
  • Assists with the development and enhancement of research cloud services based on faculty research requirements
  • Integrates cloud services into HPC infrastructure monitoring systems at MGHPCC
  • Designs and develops features such as monitoring dashboards, custom metrics, log search pattern and alarms
  • Develops event or incident remediation workflows or actions to resolve issues
  • Automate routine operational tasks or other maintenance actions

Outreach & Consultations
  • Consults directly with faculty and staff on requirements
  • Proactively monitors HPC system workloads and consults with users on best practices around workflow optimization
  • Assists users and staff with automation of process and scientific workloads across both on-prem and cloud-based research computing resources.
  • Proactively encourage the use of best practices and standards within the research computing cloud environment to ensure the stability and efficient utilization of resources.

Mentorship & Advancement
  • Mentor junior members and Graduate Research Assistants in usage and administration of existing and new research cloud technologies.
  • Attend conferences and workshops relevant to HPC and cloud technologies to advance skills
  • Stay current with emerging HPC and cloud technologies and trends
  • Participate in regional collaborations to advance skills, and expand the NU RC service catalog


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Technology related field
  • 3 years experience with the architecture and administration of cloud solutions.
  • Experience working in a higher education research environment supporting faculty and students.
  • Technical writing skills for documenting environments and procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (Python, C, C++)
  • High level of proficiency working in a linux based environment
  • Experience leading the design, development and deployment of software at scale
  • Technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization experience.
  • Experience working in an environment using GitOps, CI, and CD methodologies
  • Experience working with containers and orchestration using open source tools.
    • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with deploying hybrid systems with on-premises and public cloud components
  • Working knowledge of fundamental LAN/WAN technologies and IP protocols such as HTTP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, NFS including TCP/IP networking (IPv4/IPv6)
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative work environment with faculty, staff, scientists, and students to achieve a common goal.



  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in science or technology or 5 years equivalent work experience in a related field
  • Working knowledge of authentication protocols and other methods of providing security for passwords and network communication, including Multi-Factor Authentication
  • Experience in cybersecurity best practices related to cloud systems
  • Experience working with High Performance Computing (HPC) technologies (Infiniband, GPUs, batch schedulers, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, etc)
