Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena, California

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) seeks an experienced leader to become the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer (Vice President). The Vice President reports directly to President Thomas F. Rosenbaum and is a strategic partner to the President and Provost, a member of the President’s senior management team, and a principal liaison to Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering Institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions and pressing societal challenges. It is small and prizes excellence and ambition. The contributions of Caltech's faculty and alumni have earned national and international recognition, including 41 Nobel Prizes. The Institute has one of the nation's lowest student-to-faculty ratios, with 350 professorial faculty members who offer a rigorous curriculum and access to varied learning opportunities and hands-on research to approximately 900 undergraduates and 1,330 graduate students. Caltech operates with expenditures of approximately $3.3 billion ($708 million from the campus and $2.6 billion from JPL), an endowment of $3.1 billion, and approximately $400 million in sponsored research awards (excluding JPL). It has consistent and stable revenue sources, primarily emanating from federal research grants. The Institute employs more than 10,000 staff members including campus and JPL, and approximately 600 postdoctoral scholars.

The Vice President will oversee the overwhelming majority of Institute primary business and administrative functions, the leadership of which requires establishing and executing a vision for exemplary Institute service levels and simultaneously spans the spectrum of customary day-to-day work, problem-solving, crisis management, and strategic planning. Direct reports to the position include the Associate Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, Associate Vice President for Facilities, Associate Vice President for Human Resources, Associate Vice President for Research Administration, Chief Information Officer, Executive Director Audit Services and Institute Compliance, and the General Manager, Athenaeum (Faculty Club).

The main campus has approximately 120 buildings on 124 acres in Pasadena, California; JPL is approximately 7 miles away from the main campus, nestled in the foothills surrounding Pasadena. The additional observatory sites and facilities managed by the Institute are located in California, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Washington.
